Orlando Nightclub Gunman Scouted Walt Disney World as Potential Target: Source

The gunman behind the Orlando nightclub shootings, the deadliest mass shooting in American history, recently scouted Walt Disney World as a potential target, a federal law enforcement source tells PEOPLE.
Omar Mateen and his wife, Noor Zahi Salman, visited Walt Disney World in April, the source says. Salman told federal authorities on Sunday that her husband had more recently been "scouting Downtown Disney and Pulse [nightclub] for attacks."
Unlike the four Disney World theme parks, Downtown Disney, which was recently renamed Disney Springs, doesn't have security and bag check before entry.
Metal detectors have been installed outside Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot since 2015 and guests are selected at random for screening.
Representatives for Walt Disney World did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Despite being investigated by the FBI twice before Sunday's tragedy, Mateen bought an an AR-15-style assault rifle, a Sig Sauer RMCX, on June 4 – just one week before the attack, the source says. He also had a Glock model 17 9mm and a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver.

I just read this, I was there last week with my DH. We even made a comment while we were there that we only saw 2 security guards while visiting Disney Springs, one of which did not look to be in the shape needed should an emergency arise. The parks on the other hand, we're fully staffed.

How do they live with themselves knowing that their husbands are going to commit such terrible crimes and they've done nothing to stop it.
It really should be considered a crime if you know someone is planning any type of attack and you don't report it.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Makes no sense. It seems he just wanted to kill anyone. I'm assuming he just hates Americans, although he was born and raised in the US, so . . .

Thanks for the update... Disney Springs is Downtown Disney... Restaurants, shops, clubs... Not the rides in the parks.
There are clubs in Downtown Disney... and parents can actually get babysitters for their Disney room while they go out to the clubs there...

He is a TERRORIST< bottom line. Just hit two of his targets in one, Americans and gays (since Muslims do not believe in or support being gay). Bottom line. Don't be fooled, this is not exactly simple hate on LBGTQ. It is an Islamic Terrorist event. This is the issue, this isn't exactly about guns or gays, it's about terrorists who will use any method to kill a large number of Americans. ANd yes, he was "american" but he was a terrorist who did not "love" America.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Makes no sense. It seems he just wanted to kill anyone. I'm assuming he just hates Americans, although he was born and raised in the US, so . . .
The first week in June is known as "Gay Days" at Disney.

Any BIG tourist area is going to be and always has been a target. It is always in the back of my head when we go to Disney that something could happen. Over the last year or so, I have cut back on my trips to NYC. I worked at Ground Zero for many weeks and it didn't scare me to be there then. Now I am actually afraid to go into the city.... It is getting scarier every day out there.

They're finding out more evidence. Now, it sounds like he frequented gay clubs socially, and had a Grindr account. It's starting to look like pure hatred toward the LGBT community and not ISIS related. They can't find any evidence of an actual ISIS connection, other than that he claimed one when he called 911. I'm still waiting until they find out all of the details before I jump to any final conclusions.
No matter what, the man had some very serious mental issues in order to do what he did....

Right but the hate for GAYS is based on Muslim belief. That many gays are STONED to death in Muslim countries. So yes, his belief ABSOLUTELY has to do with his religion and he was scouting out these places to make his killings, which are based on his religious belief.

Without being an expert my gut tells me he used ISIS as an excuse and it was more of how his upbringing/religion affected him and his self-hatred for being gay. Most homophobics are fearful of being gay themselves! There was another man who was going to attack an LGBT event in Indiana. Religion sucks sometimes.
Aren't there "Christians" who blow up abortion clinics? Same thing isn't it?

Several US states still have laws (punishable by jail time in some cases) against homosexual acts between consenting adults, so it's not just Muslims. The US is also guilty of being very homophobic. Maybe not to the scale of other countries, but it's definitely present, and extremist in some cases (Westboro Baptist Church is a perfect example).
There are also countless physical (and sometimes fatal) attacks against gays in the US, and not by Muslims..... Humans are prone to hate and extreme ideology of any and all types.

So even if he was gay….he still killed 50 gay people and himself due to his religious beliefs. He could have just killed himself if he was struggling with his sexuality or whatever others are implying. He was not mentally ill, these killings were based on his religious beliefs bottom line IMO.

Can I ask what difference it makes? Why are people going back and forth on this thread on whether he did it because he hated gays or because of his religious beliefs?

True, but it changes the motive from being radical Islamic fundamentalist to disturbed individual. That fact does not diminish the atrocity, but it changes the conversation.
