This is heartbreaking...just heartbreaking.

Question - I really don't know much about guns, but why would someone buy an assault rifle? Like, wouldn't that raise a red flag to the gun store owner? Or is it "normal" for gun owners to buy them. Really, really curious.

Exactly! Especially for someone who (from what I've heard/read) has been on the FBI's watch list for a few years. Why was it so easy for him to get this weapon?

I was asking the same question. Watching the news they said he was on a Federal watch list, but was able to buy an assault rifle last week. Really?!?!?!? How?!?!?!?!

Yes apparently he was on the watch list twice and both times dismissed, so I have no clue how he was even allowed to buy this weapon... such a tragedy Chat Icon my prayers and thoughts to those victims and their families.

Because apparently to some, even the mentally ill and terror suspects have gun rights that need to be protected at the expense of the lives of innocents. Really, I'm tired of being sad when I hear about these events on an almost daily basis. I'm outraged.

Problem #1 is that the ban on assault-type weapons (like was used in orlando) was allowed to expire in 2004.

Problem #2 is that people who are on the terror watch list are still allowed to purchase firearms because (as it has been explained to me) if they were not allowed it would tip them off that they are on a watch list.

So 49 people had to die so this ahole didn't find out he was on a watch list?

Total insanity.

Re: Orlando shooting

This is extremely scary. Terrorists want to stop us from living our lives the way we do. They will stop at nothing to accomplish their goals, even if it means they die as a result. I lost any hope that there is a way to stop this. Restrictive gun laws didn't stop the Paris attacks. Those attacks were done with illegal guns. If they have to, they will build bombs out of stuff you can get at just about any hardware store. Terrorists believe there is glory in killing people. They die thinking they are going to be rewarded. How do you stop that? I fear for my son and the future generations. It's never going to stop and these attacks are going to get more and more frequent on American soil.

I was just having this conversation with DH, terrorists will use anything to kill people. They will create their own bombs if they don't get access to guns. Its so sad and scary that ISIS is in our country, and NOTHING is being done to stop it.

From what I understand the NRA and "others" won't let a bill pass that would allow them to cross reference the FBI's watch list with background checks. That's a problem... #1 Assault rifles don't need to be in the hands of civilians and #2 who wants to keep blocking a bill like this???!!

Eta: I was reading an article on politifact that says most of the people on the watch list are citizens... So we have a major problem within our country.

It's insane how and why it's allowed to keep happening. Is there/could there be a way to alert the.FBI if someone on the watch list tries to purchase firearms/assault weapons, like an immediate red flad electronic alert so FBI can intervene asap?

If they were able to do that, terrorists just won't try to buy legal guns because they know they will be flagged. They will find other ways to attack us. Maybe more backpack bombs like the Boston Marathon. How do we go about finding all the terrorists and stop them before they attack us? Give the government unlimited power? Do we grant them access to everything and the power to indefinitely detain and interrogate all suspects? How do we stop it without losing all our freedoms in the process?

Acquiring weapons illegally, therein lies another problem in this country. Realistically, and unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to stop terrorists. This is the new reality we're living in, sadly.

Something else that I've seen mentioned... his ex-wife said he was very abusive. Did she have an OOP or was he ever arrested for that? That's another reason he should not have been able to buy a gun. Stopping him from buying a gun for that reason is much simpler then the FBI having to prove he's a terrorist.

It's the same rhetoric time after time "our thoughts and preyers" etc etc. Honestly when no changes were made after twenty 6 year olds were murdered in their classrooms NOTHING will be done in this country to stop this savagery.

Yes they will build bombs and get us in other ways but why give them the option to purchase assault rifles? Why not link up any legal gun shop with the FBI so that EVERYONE who buys an assault rifle is made known to the FBI. I know this won't stop the black market settling but why is it impossible to buy a kinder egg in the US because one child choked on the toy but we can rock up and get an assault rifle. The irony is embarrassing.

We are so caught up in our "rights" that we forget that its our right to go to school, a movie theater, a college, a nightclub etc without getting our heads blown up...its a complete and utter joke and it makes me enraged that nothing is being done.

Exactly.
Everyone will change their facebook profile pic for a few days or feel they need to discuss their feelings on the tragedy on Facebook. Like that matters.
Like social media or changing your pic or a stupid hashtag will do anything.
I feel like the terrorists are laughing at us as we take selfies and spout our personal opinions and feelings on social media.
Until real changes are made and the government does something, it will just continue to happen.

So what does the NRA say is the reason that people need to have the right to buy assault riffles?
Home protection?
Hunting?
I can't see it.

I can't come up with a good reason for allowing them to be owned.

A handgun, yes.
Something like this no.

What's the reasoning? What would you use this for other than mass killing?

Anyone know?

I'm pro gum, but a hand gun to conceal carry or for protection. i don't think assault rifles should be or need to be sold. The problem is if you want a gun you can get one. They are everywhere. Yes his was bought legally, but at the end of the day if he wanted it he would would find a way to get it. His wife never pressed charges and was whisked away into the night on an emergency flight by er family 4 months into marriage. We have a watch list and we need to enforce it better.

That's the problem.

There is NO reason.

The NRA has ingrained in people that is their RIGHT to have a weapon - whether it is needed or warranted - simply because it says so in the Constitution. They have ingrained in people the fear that guns are needed and the government's sole agenda is to disarm the American people, so they instill fear in people to arm themselves.

It is ******* sick.

I firmly believe that the NRA is a warmonger unto itself, just as deadly as any terror organization, just homegrown and blindly worshipped.

Yup pretty much all this, both these posts sum up my thoughts. The second amendment doesn't give people the rights or protection to buy an arsenal of assault rifles. NOBODY needs military grade weapons for protection, doesn't matter how the NRA or anyone else tries to spin it. Leave these weapons to the military and out of the hands of civilians. These weapons make civilians sitting ducks wherever they are... in restaurants, malls, movie theaters, churches, universities, ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS! How is someone with a handgun going to stand off a maniac with an assault rifle that turns targets into a million little pieces???

People say, well if someone wants to buy it they will just obtain it illegally. I would actually be slightly less outraged if this POS got his weapons illegally. What outrages me is that a man on the watch list, investigated and interrogated multiple times, WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN THIS WEAPON LEGALLY. LEGALLY!!!! Put your FB solidarity profile pics (of white countries and cities of course, where's the wave of flag profile pics when it happened in Nigeria, or Lebanon, or all the other countries that are hit basically everyday?? Oh no, we only stand united against terrorism when it happens to white countries) and sad emoticons, and pouty duck face selfies away. It's getting ridiculously sickening at this point. Instead of making lengthy posts about what a sad day this is to be white, be furious that this POS was able to walk in and get these weapons LEGALLY! Where is the outrage?? Why is nobody speaking out against the fact that if a terror suspect can get weapons legally in our country, we are fuked, and what is our govt doing to protect us??? If that can legally happen, we aren't any safer now than we were last year or the year before. It's just a countdown to the next attack. Will it be in NY next? A concert? A restaurant? Unfortunately, only time will tell.

Re: Orlando shooting

I'm not pro-gun and I'm not sure how accurately I remember from the last time I researched it but from my understanding of what I've read, the term assault rifle isn't a technical one, it just refers to the appearance of the gun. Any time a ban has been mentioned it includes a lot of hunting rifles because there is no difference in the actual working of the gun or the ammo it uses. Which is why the NRA and gun owners are opposed to a ban. Semi-auto means you pull the trigger once, it fires one bullet, so any ban would easily make most hunting rifles illegal. I'll google a pic to see if I can find an easier way to explain it.

Orlando shooting

I like how this is an NRA problem and not an ISIS / immigration problem.

The tragedy is incredibly senseless and very sad. Innocent people were killed and honestly, this could have been prevented. National security needs to be a priority. The war on terror is real and this has hit home for many people. Blaming of the NRA is BS. We need to focus on the people that hate us, our way of life. They are a threat to women, gays, children- everyone. THAT is the problem. They hate us and there are so many of them. It is so scary.

So true! Everyone is always so quick to blame the guns when it's really a terrorist problem. They won't stop until we are all dead. Look at 9/11... they used airplanes as weapons. Their religion teaches them that killing us is the right thing to do. How do we stop that?

Immigration... gunman was American born, as we'll see many of these animals are our own. Blaming immigration is pointless.
