UPDATE on top....Car hit us and didn't stop.. what can we do?
My parents and I were headed to LI during the rainstorm, and some idiot switched lanes and hit our car. No real damage, but he kept on driving. Since it was the middle of LIE, we thought we was driving away from to find a shoulder to pullover,but he kept going. We followed him for about 2 miles because we were headed the same way, and when he realized that we were behind him honking at him, he pulled over, exchanged some words and he said he's in a rush and don't have time for this BS and he drove off. I have a picture of his license plate. We called 911, and the operator said there's nothing they can do since the driver left the scene.
Is there really nothing that we can do? I'm so angry, sad and just annoyed. 
Update: My parents don't want to anything, because one of my mom's coworkers alluded that the guy may have ties to law enforcement (i.e. he may be a cop, or military) or relative of someone high up for him to be so ballsy and drive away without any fear..  and if it spirals into something else, they don't have the time to run behind it. They feel what if there's retaliation or something if they go to a precinct and file something, there's a warrant out for him, and he ends being a cop.. you can't make this up, and it was 
They are quite old school, and I don't see talking them out of it, once their mind is made up. I see their point, and understand where they coming from even though we both are quite different in our thinking.

Since nobody was injured and there was no real damage there is nothing they can do legally to him.
But if you need to make an insurance claim you can call your insurance company and give them his plate number to find out if he has insurance etc.
Will you be making an insurance claim?

You can still report it to your insurance company and provide the license plate to them. They will find out their insurance carrier and either let you know so you can file the claim or they will contact them directly to see if he reported it and get the info that way. Depending upon the coverage you have, you can either use it and your company can subro against the other company or you can claim it right with the other company.

I'd do all you can to put this guy through the ringer, which unfortunately isn't much.
I'm sorry this happened to you. I've seen things like this so many times since I've moved to LI, along with people driving into things like trees and buildings (you know, things that don't move). And no one cares. Some woman drove into my rearview mirror on Hempstead turnpike and gave me the finger. Another guy tried to go around me as I pulled into my driveway- by around I mean in the direction I was turning. I have dozens more stories. Beyond the terrible driving I have never seen such arrogance and disregard for other people. And I'm from the freaking city.

My sister had this happen recently and the cop kept saying "you know you are gonna get this guy arrested". So I think you can still file a report and get him in trouble for leaving the scene of the accident.

My DH had someone hit his car in a parking lot and leave the scene - a guy left a note w/ the plate # of who hit him... we had damage so we did go to the police and ultimately his insurance had to pay our fees. He didn't get in any "trouble" though - the DA just made sure we were covered w/o any out of pocket costs.
I know with Geico - leaving the scene of the accident (regardless of damage) is one of the reasons his insurance could go up if they found out - if I were mad enough, I'd report it just for that.

That happened to me about a year ago - they decided to be in my lane and did $2,600 in damages all down the side of my mini van. I got the license plate number as they drove off and I called the police for a report. They couldn't find the person b/c it was an out of state tag (didn't know where he was staying), but if they caught him, he would have been charged with hit and run and arrested (which was fine with me). I reported it to my insurance and I had to pay the deductible, and they spent about 6 months trying to track down the insurance company of the other car. In the end, they said they couldn't find them, but it didn't matter to me (other than having to pay the $500 deductible) b/c my car was fixed and my rates didn't go up.

Since you have a license plate number, you can file a police report, the driver might be issued a summons for leaving the scene of an accident.

This is not true. As a citizen you can file a claim at the police department and go to court over it. I had to do this in 2009 when the cop was an asshole and didn't give the driver who hit me any ticket for reckless driving. She went to court and tried pleading it down, she still ended up with points and a big fine. It came in handy having my lieutenant help me (I worked at a police station at the time) figure out the claim I needed to file bc the clerk cannot help you, so do some research before you go!

I took her to court over a reckless driving ticket. We went to court 5 years later for the damage we sustained from the accident. I truly feel people are such bad drivers bc they never have responsibility in accidents, their insurance takes care of everything. But with the ticket she was hit with points and awesomely a few years later when she received more points, her license was revoked. Sorry for my tangent, but the driver can still get a ticket/arrested for leaving the scene of an accident regardless of damage.

Thank you everyone, I'm going to talk to my parents again. I'm 36 weeks pregnant, so they are just grateful that nothing happened, and I am too but it could have ended badly. I know they don't want to go through their insurance for this, but I think the driver should be slapped with a ticket or something.

I'm just confused- a ticket for reckless driving is issued by the state, county city, whatever. If someone wants to fight a ticket they go to court and fight it and either the judge decides or the cop who issued it testifies and then the judge rules.
How can a regular citizen, take another regular citizen to court for a reckless driving ticket?
Are you saying you testified for the prosecution (the county)?

This happened to me. I got a picture of the plate and when I called the police I had to fill out a report and they asked me if I wanted the driver arrested so I'm sure that something can be done.

He hit you guys with no fkn regard for your safety. And you are pregnant!!! Absolutely no way would I allow this MF'er to get away with what I'm sure he tries to get away with every day.
He could have hurt you....your parents. Ugh. He had absolutely no idea who was in that car nor did he give a shiiiit.
Sorry.. No freebie for this guy. As you can tell; my blood is boiling over this SOB! Start out with a filing a police report. Don't wait too long to call. Make sure you tell them you have his license. Make sure you them that you are pregnant!
And take it from there.

Go to the precinct where it happened and fill out a police report. It is technically a hit and run. Happened to me a few years ago and good thing that I took pictures and reported it because the nut job (who at some point got my plate #) called the police a week later and said I hit her and severely damaged her car. I had a scratch on my bumper. I was able to supply the police report and pictures and nothing happened to me...

I agree! If you hit someone's car/property, you STOP and make sure everything is ok. Isn't that just human decency????

The issue here is the damage he caused by hitting your car. When you say there was "no real damage," it seems there was no crime committed in him leaving the scene. Only when damage occurs to property or someone is injured is he required to stop and exchange his license and insurance info. If there is even a scratch on your car, call the police again where the accident occurred, tell them there WAS damage to your car and file a report. They should take it and follow up with the guy. I think he might be able to get away with it though if he says he did stop but you told him there was no damage or injury.
Sorry that happened to you. That sounds very scary.
ETA: An old lady backed into my mom's parked car in a parking lot recently. Another lady took down her plate number and gave it to my mom. My mom had a little ding on her bumper. She called the police and they took it as a fleeing the scene of an accident bc there was damage to my moms car. The poor old lady had no idea she hit my moms car! My mom ended up not going through insurance or anything either, but the cops did follow up bc there was damage to my moms car. So I think that's the issue.

Im shocked the person wouldnt even get a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident.
Years ago my daugbter hit a parked car. She did minor damage to the mirror. She left a note with her info for them to call her. Instead they called the cops and had the cops call us to their house. The cop told us the people were being nice because they couldve had her arrested for leaving the scene of an accident.

There are citizen tickets. You go to the police station and speak to the clerk there and fill out paperwork and prove that the person deserves a ticket that a police officer fails to issue. We had her served with papers for both reckless driving and I don't remember the exact phrase but bc she was using a cell phone another ticket for that as well. Officers were not involved but she still received all penalties as if an officer issued the ticket.
