Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
Thought this was an interesting quiz, especially with so many of the "bubbliest" areas being in NY...
Quiz
Evidently this has been discussed before! Old Thread

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
I'm not understanding what my score means at all. I get that the higher the number, the thinner the bubble but the rest of it I can't make sense of.
ETA: I got a 63, but the answer chart has 3 categories highlighted. So which one does it think I fall into?

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
Also the scoring is confusing:
0–43: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person who has made a point of getting out a lot. Typical: 9.
0–20: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person with the television and movie going habits of the upper middle class. Typical: 2.
So what if you score a 10 or 15 or 20- which one are you? You'd fall into both of the above categories no?

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
Some of the questions skew the results, especially for LI.
If you buy a $50k pickup truck, it's supposed to make your score more "blue collar" because pickups in general are often used for working, but not on Long Island....
Most of my fishing was on charter boats, which most people wouldn't considered a working class activity....

Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
Mine was 29. Weird quiz tho.
11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents. Typical: 33.
0–43: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person who has made a point of getting out a lot. Typical: 9.

It leaves some grey area so you choose which applies more to you.

My range was in 3 categories
48–99: A lifelong resident of a working-class neighborhood with average television and movie going habits.
42–100: A first-generation middle-class person with working-class parents and average television and movie going
11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents.

I would say I am more of 0-43, the 2nd option. I definitely consider my parents upper middle class but they made A LOT more money than DH and I do. I would classify DH and I as more comfortable middle class.

Mine was 39 first gen upper middle to middle class parents
I am better off than my parents were growing up. I also think some questions don't really mean anything. Pickup truck fishing

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
Strange they think the highest ranking indicates less of a bubble.
I consider the "Budweiser-pickup truck- fishing" stereotype to be its own bubble. No offense to any of these things in particular.
White, middle class America is a bubble, largely insulated from the realities of the world. Reading, eating, and watching what big companies tell them to do through marketing......

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
This was fascinating to me.
This also explains why so many millions of Americans cannot understand how Trump is a viable candidate. So many people are insulated and DONT understand how people buy pickup trucks, go fishing regularly, or work in a factory.
(FWIW - I am NOT a trump supporter at all, but totally understand how/why he is where he is today. I got 1st gen. Middle class)

I got a pretty high score and answered no to the pickup truck & domestic beer.
I'm not sure how this test is scored. None of those descriptions fit me. I've lived in lower income areas but I'm by no means poor (even by Long Island standards).

I don't think it's that we don't understand how people buy a pickup truck or go fishing I don't see how not doing these things would make me live in a bubble. I don't see a need for a pickup truck. I have 2 kids. Where would I put them. Does it insinuate I don't need one cause of my fancy job?? My dh has contemplated buying one for work it's not an extra we can afford so he buys an suv with a fold down third row. Fishing - I hate fish the smell all of it. Doesn't mean I don't understand some people live this way or that I am in a bubble Beer i don't drink and neither does my dh I always hates the taste of beer so that means I live in a bubble
Some things I get but a lot I think is arbitrary and depends on what regions of the country you live in

Re: Do you live in a bubble? Quiz
I got a 33... So 2nd gen middle class who gets out a lot or 1st gen upper middle class with middle class parents. I definitely don't consider myself upper middle class though my combined salary with my DH is decent... I'd consider myself more 2nd gen middle class. Really odd quiz though.
ETA: Though after seeing some polls on this forum our combined salary is NOT considered decent by LI standards.
ETAA: apparently I took this quiz back in 2012 and scored slightly higher. But very slightly... Makes sense though, I wasn't where I am now.

Maybe I didn't word it correctly. What I'm trying to say is that a lot people living in places like Long Island or other deemed (I'm not trying to get burned at the PC stake here...just over generalizing) 'educated' and 'affluent' areas have difficulty recognizing that there is a large population of people living a vastly different lifestyle with vastly different values. Clearly YOU recognize and understand that there are...but there are many who do not. Media outlets, major newspapers, and many Americans in areas like Long Island, etc. cannot fathom HOW someone like Trump can make his way through the political process. Maybe you (a general 'you' and not PP specific) don't see a correlation between the test and trump's popularity, however I definitely do.
I think it's very interesting!
