Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
well i got it wrong, and I am an 8th grade math teacher. I am not embarrassed to admit that, either, because i think this is a really poorly written math question!!!

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
Thanks for your replies. Honestly one of the biggest problems I have found with common core is the wording. Its always so confusing. Even my 1st graders math homework is often worded in such a way that I have to read it a few times to figure out what they are asking. I don't agree at all with this type of wording helping our kids be critical thinkers. From my experience with my DD it has the opposite effect - it makes her feel inadequate because she cannot understand what they are asking.
If you need to know the sum of 5 + 5 then ask for it..don't run around the bush looking for it as you have lost a large % of the kids en route due to boredom and frustration.

My father picks my kids up after school and does their homework with them. My father has a genius IQ - tested and everything, was top of his class in college - and he gets so frustrated with the homework and can't always figure it out. He swears these books were written by someone who does not speak English as a first language.

as far as junior high math goes, the common core isn't so bad. However, I have seen the elementary math and I hate it. The whole premise of it is that they don't want the kids to just memorize all of the facts. They want them to truly understand why the answer came to be. I memorized my addition/subtraction/multiplication/division facts and turned out just fine.
