are the slashings something to be concerned about?

I'm spending the weekend in the city next weekend (staying in the financial district, but taking the subway all over the city). I didn't think anything of it until I saw a thread on another forum about how everyone's scared of the subway slashers. Is this a thing now? Is it mostly Brooklyn trains at night or is it happening at other times?

anything can happen at any time no matter where you are in the world. Just be alert and avoid eye contact with people.

I take the subway daily and am not really concerned. I mean I'm always aware of the general crazies and steer clear, but I haven't taken any extra precautions.

Slashing are up but it's not like it's happening to everyone. Someone from the mayor's office (I think but maybe police dept) just release a statement about it and basically said just be smart - be aware of your surroundings and keep you head out of your phone when your walking down the street. I really wouldn't be overly concerned. Enjoy the city

I am in the city 5 days a week and never have been scared about that or anything else. Things happen but IMO you can't live your life scared. Just be aware of your surroundings.

I take the dreaded A train to commute. We have tons of crazies all the time. However, I am on edge now with all the slashings and I have started wearing a facemask (fabric) and loop my scarf around it. I do this when i'm on the street too now. Great for winter, not sure what i'll do come summer.

Some of the slashings have been from behind.

Some I believe are schizophrenics, some I tend to think are gang initiations just because of the sheer jump in slashings. 22% increase is the stat I heard somewhere.

Not trying to freak you out, just telling you what I do.

I 100% think it's something to be concerned about. Someone was slashed in the leg, two blocks from my house (in Queens). I am so much more aware of my surroundings now.
I mean, it wouldn't stop me from making plans/keeping plans, but I am so much more aware.

Exactly - "Everyone" is not afraid to ride the subway. The trains are jam packed, as always - The same loons are running around the city, same as in any city in the world. I don't think there are any 'more' of them now -

I will say, IMO, being in the city for the last 15 years, I'm more alert and pay more attention now b/c I loathe this mayor and how he's let the city become a dirty mess again ..........but, as with anything, you just need tp be paying attention. Don't have your headphones on, don't be lost in your phone, be aware of what and who is around you

The answer is what YOU are comfortable with.

I am in the city 5 days a week in Midtown. I will be here this weekend with my girlfriends. I am ALWAYS aware. I am ALWAYS alert. I am NEVER buried n my cell phone. So if you are aware of your surroundings, the answer for me is no, I am not terribly worried.

Anything can happen to anyone. The more aware you are the better.

Welcome to DeBlasio's NYC. Honestly, it scares me. We avoid the city unless we absolutely have to go.

This to a degree

I don't avoid eye contact. I look to see what I see. Not everyone is a loon.

That said, I remember sitting peacefully on an E train while a mad man ran past with his shirt open, blood on his chest with a knife. He ran through our car into the next. We just sat there. A moment passed and a few rumbles and I assume he was apprehended by the cops who had stopped our train. Meh, New York, was all I could think. I mean not being a New Yorker by birth I sort of expected as much to be honest.

Now I'm sitting in my office here in San Antonio with an armed policeman parked on my floor due to threats made. We've had PD here for two weeks now. All locks have been changed and we're offered escort to our cars.

I refuse to live in fear. But I also try hard not to 'die stupid' as my Dad would say.

Doesn't matter where you are, bad things happen. Just be aware, look around. For me that means DON'T keep your head down. Eyes UP! Look at everything without being obvious. Be aware of your surrounds at all times. Something I'm constantly telling my own daughter. Something my father taught me and something that helped me on 9/11.

yes , look at everything. just avoid making eye contact. if you happen to make eye contact, dont look afraid. I didnt say keep your head down. Just dont stare at people. Ive been taking city trains ALONE since i was 12. I have seen EVERYTHING. Even last week I got off the train because someone sitting across from me was mumbling and holding a backpack tightly against their chest. I have major anxiety but i dont let it control my life.

Just read this article:

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD is deploying more officers to subway stations in the wake of a flurry of slashing attacks this year.

As CBS2’s Brian Conybeare reported, the effort was under way Friday afternoon at the 125th Street A, B, C and D train station in Harlem. Police were putting on a show of force in an effort to make people feel more comfortable underground.

This effort in particular is designed to make people feel safer in the subway at night — after a 20 percent rise in slashings and stabbings around the city.

About two dozen NYPD transit and community affairs officers were deployed at the station at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, as well as other stations around the five boroughs.

Officers handed out safety information to passengers on platforms, patrolling on trains and trying to reassure people with a show of force. Straphangers told CBS2 Friday afternoon that they welcomed the move.

“A lot of times people got hurt in the subway; got robbed, so if the police are close, it’s easier to catch the person,” said Jennifer Gordon.

“We need more policing at different stations,” said Marianella Flores.

NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Vincent Coogan said the officers will step in whenever needed.

“There’s a presence out there. You know, people see the police officers, and if there’s anything on the trains that need attention by police, it will be taken care of,” Coogan said.

Teams of officers were also patrolling subway stations in the Bronx Saturday night, and they will be targeting stations in all five boroughs over the next several month.

Earlier this week, officials announced a plan to put more officers on the trains during the 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. tour and the midnight to 8 a.m. tour; send Strategic Response teams to targeted stations; and officers assigned above ground are asked to stop into subway stations in their command and walk the platforms.

1010 WINS also learned from sources that train inspections will increase from about 10 to 15 times a day, to 40. Teams will also fan out from Times Square or mid-Manhattan stations into the outer boroughs, sources told 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa.

Teams involving community affairs officers will also be at strategic subway stops, talking to commuters and showing a presence, sources said.
