WWYD - Prom Question

My daughter was friends with a boy in middle school that eventually moved to Tennessee with his family. She has kept in touch with him all these years. I never met him or his family but since they've moved spoken to him and his mother on a few occasions. Well he's invited my daughter to be his prom date (he is one year older). My husband and I will be meeting him and his mother face to face on a planned trip to Atlanta (my daughter will be there too). My DH says absolutely not, she shouldn't go; he's a boy and only looking for one thing. I think that we should wait to decide until we meet them face to face.

Even if we meet face to face and all goes well, would you send your 17 year old daughter out of state to a prom?

That's a tough one. I think it would really depend on what he is like when you meet him in person. And what their sleeping arrangements will be like and all that, of course.

I feel like I would say no because it sounds like a logistical nightmare, but if you go with her for the weekend and already know the parents, I can't see how that's much different than prom up here.

Ditto. I think the cost would be the biggest factor. I went to a senior prom when I was a year younger than my date so I don't see that being an issue. I guess it would also depend on what their after prom plans are.

I think it's sweet that he asked her. If, after meeting him and his parents you think he is a good kid, AND you can go with your daughter for the weekend, I would let her go

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

I wouldn't have a problem with her going to the prom, I think the ONLY issue would be her going out of state alone. That would make me take pause. However, if you can accompany her on the trip so she's staying in a hotel with you then I don't see a problem with her going to this guy's prom.

Regardless of what your DH thinks his intentions are the fact is, she's 17 and boys and proms are all normal and par for the course as a teenager. If you can work out the travel/trip then I would let her go to the prom. Chat Icon

Hmmm, I didn't even consider going with her. I'll have to speak to DH and see what he thinks of me going with her.

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

Has your daughter never dated? Just asking because of your husband's comment. Seems odd if she has already gone out with boys before.

I guess it all depends on the logistics. If they work out, I don't see why not and she is old enough to travel on her own if that is the only thing that works out.

WWYD - Prom Question

If you went on the trip and what not I would say let her go- if kids wanna do something they will find a way to. Even if it was here and prom. I wouldn't let her fly alone but prom is prom. I say if you can afford 2 tickets and the time from work- go!

What's the difference if you're in the state or not? You won't be actually going along with her. You either trust her, or you don't. What does she say about it?

I feel like it's not quite that simple - trust is one thing, but also, being in a different state adds a level of complication if god forbid something happened. I'd rather be in the same location as my child just in case.

The truth is that I really have no issue with my daughter flying alone; she's flown a lot by herself and has already experienced a lot of travel delays and issues. For me, the issue is that I really do not know this boy or his family.

I absolutely trust my daughter. But she is still inexperienced.

No I wouldn't let my DD go. Has she even seen him in person since middle school? I'm with your DH on this one.

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

I always find it funny when DH's say things like that when it comes to their own DD's. She is 17 and will do what she wants.

That being said , I wouldn't let her go alone. My concern is not the boy, it's the friends he has that she/ you don't know. The travel logistics that night and if there will be drinking or anything else Chat Icon

I would say no prom but if he wants to come visit this summer or spring break he is welcome just to ease your guilt Chat Icon

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

If she was really set on going and it would break her heart not to, I would take her down there myself and make sure she goes and comes back safely. But alone NO WAY.

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

The only way she would be going OOS would be if I were to go with her and she was to come back to my hotel room that night. It could be a nice weekend for you both if circumstances ( and your DH :) ) allow it.

Re: WWYD - Prom Question

sounds like it could be a really fun experience for her to explore a prom in another state. i would say yes IF, AND ONLY IF, i went with her. no, not to the prom, but on the trip.

of course the prom and boys are part of being a teenage girl, but she should have a curfew and one of her parents should be able to enforce it.

heck, you might be able to stay in the boy's house... or a nearby hotel.

i don't believe it's a matter of not trusting your daughter or even the boy. as a parent, sometimes you have to be seen as the bad guy/enforcer.

hope that came across right.

WWYD - Prom Question

I would only allow it if I was going with her and staying close by for the night. I would also expect her back at my hotel by a certain time. Finances would play a huge part too.
