Ah, LIF. The place where we hunger for diversity in our Barbie dolls, but not in our school districts
Side note though DDs friend is 8..her dad is a total stickler for what she eats always has been since she was a toddler. He even regulates how much fruit she eats because he doesn't want her to get fat. She's not even heavy..ugh. Breaks my heart and IMO you are setting them up for food issues as they get older when you are that strict.

My mom is like that.... With my 22 month old. "She shouldn't be eating that" "don't you think she's had enough?" "She eats fruits and vegetables, right?" Not surprising since I remember her pointing at a little bit of fat near my armpit when I was about 9 or 10, saying that it shouldn't be there. When she was on Atkins, our whole house was on Atkins. I couldn't eat steak or eggs for years. She's awful. I will do everything in my power to make sure my kids have a healthy body image, no matter what size they are.

They may not realize it at such a young age but they internalize it. I was a psych major and we did a whole unit on many studies involving Barbie and kids and they were really shocking. Banning Barbies isnt a solution, but constant exposure to these beauty norms and ideals IS something even 2-3yo are picking up on and studies with toddlers playing with barbies as opposed to playing with other toys and then taking various tests scored extremely differently. It's really jarring. I am a mom of two boys and I think moms of girls face some unique challenges raising kids in today's society.
This really made me think. I come on here with my opinion and really, I haven't done any studies. I haven't even read studies about it. So for me to comment without knowing was pretty ignorant. The more I think about it, there's only so much I can do as a parent and that makes me sad. It's like anything else, you can be raised and taught to believe or think one thing, but society is going to play a huge part in molding what's considered normal and beautiful.
Even if I do everything right, I cannot shield my kids from the world. Everything they see (from television to people in public places) has the potential to influence them somehow. If parents were the only influence in a kids life, we'd have a ton of 20 yr olds still believing in Santa lol.
I'm not sure changing a doll is really going to be helpful in changing body image issues though. It could even make it worse if kids start teasing other kids about the doll choices the parent picked. Like if you bought your daughter a short and curvy doll, will kids be like "your mom thinks your short and fat".
In 20 years, there could be women complaining that they realized they were fat when their mom bought them the "fat" doll despite the fact that their moms were just trying to teach them that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
