I have zero input.
No kids and don't live in the district but I have a question...

Will this now make the schools over crowded? Is that why people are upset?

Yes, can someone explain what caused them to close?

Sachem has been mismanaging their money for years now. It has finally caught up to them and they are in a serious fiscal crisis. Enrollment is declining, so the decision was made to close 2 elementary schools and 1 middle school to try and save money.

It's merely a band aid on a much bigger problem and in 2 years, they will probably have to go through this yet again.

It's not just mismanagement of funds. A lot is tied to state aid that never came. I'm not in the district, but my sil teachers there. Yes, many will lose their jobs

It is mismanagement of funds going back a decade. This is not something new that just happened.

And my understanding is, that, yes, state aid that was promised never came through, but in my opinion, spending that money before we actually had it, is a complete mismanagement of funds.

Are they laying off all those staff members from the schools too?

They will not decide that until the next school year.

I've heard through someone who works there, yes. They will be laying off staff

Unfortunately, they would have to lay off staff or they really aren't saving any money doing this. The buildings still need to be kept up, so this is where the savings is coming from. Absolutely devastating for all these teachers and staff to find out about this right before Christmas.

I honestly think I'm the only one in the district not upset by this. People are in full blown panic mode. It's not the end of the world.

This. Such is life. Crappy things happen that are beyond our control.
While it does stink, it's beyond our control.

Is the state involved at all? I'm used to NYC so there's oversight upon oversight (not to say mismanagement doesn't happen), but to just shut down schools? That seems outrageous and horribly sad.
Is sachem a wealthy neighborhood?
This disturbs me :(

No, we are not wealthy. I would consider Sachem a middle class working community?

Yep and this is something that has been building up for many years. They built 2 brand new schools while the enrollment was declining. Bad decisions all around for many, many years.

I'm glad they pulled the plug and finally did something. This is only a temporary fix and more cuts will have to happen in order for us to regain some financial stability. I dislike the idea of Seneca being a split middle school but there isn't anything we can do now. We all just have to adjust.

The talk is that they have a renter which is likely boces for Sequoya. Also mention that Gatelot could be rented to scope and become where all the upk classrooms are.

I'm in Sachem SD but my kids are not in school yet. What does it mean for Seneca to be a "split middle school"?

Seneca will have 4 elementary schools funneling into it.
Grundy
Nokomis
Tamarac
Merrimac

Grundy And Nokomis will be North feeding schools
and Tamarac and Merrimac will be east feeing schools. So after 8th grade all those kids were together for 3 years will now be split into 2 different hs. I just think that stinks for kids who make friendships and now have to be split up.

I agree but I don't think any decision was easy. I am truly glad that my kids don't really get affected too much with this though and maybe that is selfish but I have so many other changes coming along that I need something that helps me out lol

Adding that second high school was a big mistake years back.

Yep it was an awful idea but the community voted on it. There was a lot of mistakes among the road. Spending our reserves for years without being able to replenish has left us in horrendous financial shape.
I am hoping that with the Nolan and Singer retiring and several board positions open this year maybe we can get some people with new ideas. I've been to almost every meeting since Sept and the board has such a hard time making decisions. Its painful to watch. The need people with direction and wisdom.

I agree any decision they made would leave someone unhappy. Closing schools is not popular. It had to be done we need to save money. If you attended the meetings and listened to the board some of the members of the board have been vocal that this is just the begining of the cuts that need to happen.

I have been to meetings and friends with people on the board. I am well aware of the cuts and have had to deal with them through the years with my both children. We worked through them though. Everyone can.

Re: For anyone in Sachem SD

Just want to let the families that are dealing with this in .sachem know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

We are in the HHH district and we went through a similar experience in our district last year where they closed 2 elementary schools plus redistricted. It was a very emotional year leading up to it between parents, children and the district.

Seeing this post reminds me of where we were and where we are now. The kids are resilient. They all are doing well in the perspective schools and they have adapted pretty well.. For the parent it is taking a little longer but in the end everything is going well..

I know it sounds awful now but give it time. Everything happens for different reasons and will all work out...

Growing up my elementary school fed into 2 different Middle Schools. I was with everyone for 6 years and then we all got split up . It ended up being ok. I barely remember it affecting me much. I hope it will be the same for my DD. In the end the kids will be fine.

Where I grew up was similar. 3 elementary districts fed into 1 middle school/hs district consisting of 2 MS and 3 HS. Each MS split into 2 HS. It wasn't so bad.

More resdistricting is happening in 2 years. This is far from over. I am sad we didn't get out 2 years ago when my husband said to. Sachem is in a piss poor state. I go to the board meetings as well. We need to get the old board out and bring the new in to try and fix years of mismanagement. Thank god for Slattery, Coggin and Roberts who are probably the only 3 that have a clue up there...

I honestly think I'm the only one in the district not upset by this. People are in full blown panic mode. It's not the end of the world.

I agree. Maybe because my kids are too young but for parents to be literally crying over this is a little much IMO.
