Re: For anyone in Sachem SD

More resdistricting is happening in 2 years. This is far from over. I am sad we didn't get out 2 years ago when my husband said to. Sachem is in a piss poor state. I go to the board meetings as well. We need to get the old board out and bring the new in to try and fix years of mismanagement. Thank god for Slattery, Coggin and Roberts who are probably the only 3 that have a clue up there...
I am just glad my kids will be out of school and in high school by then but I do agree, they have a great board and feel confident in them

For anyone in Sachem SD
I feel bad for the kids who will be displaced and end up in a different school from their friends. And I feel very bad for any teachers or other staff that may lose their jobs. Smithtown schools did something similar when I was in middle school. They closed all the middle schools, and made one of their two high schools into a middle school. It stayed that way for about a decade, I think, maybe a little less, and then they decided to go back to having two high schools and reopened all the middle schools. I think it's just a matter of how to best use tax money.

While they may have made bad decisions on building extra buildings, those are mostly covered from bond proposals. The issues that is causing them so much stress now is that they used up all their reserve funds. No good business person blows through their reserves and hopes that someone will bail them out. Everyone on the BOE should be fired including whoever is the Business Superintendent. All districts have been going through hard budget times and needed to cut staff/programs but Sachem didn't want to face that so they paid from their reserves and now that is what is biting them in the ass.

Horrendous mismanagement of funds, I agree. They really all should be fired. Every single one. How did this go on for so long? Unbelievable

This is a new board so can't fire anyone from a decade ago or even a few years ago.

Well then let's hope this new board starts fixing things. I have never heard of such gross mismanagement.

What about Administration? They can't all be new. There is no sense blaming things that happened a decade ago. If they were not doing cuts, even last year then whoever was on the Board was financially negligent.

For anyone in Sachem SD
I graduated from Sachem (ages ago!) and I think they should never have split the HS and added the second one. Was our school big, yes! Graduated with over 1200 students but it was fine and a really good school.

There have been many cuts as my children were affected by them.

I have zero input. No kids and don't live in the district but I have a question...
Will this now make the schools over crowded? Is that why people are upset?
Yes, can someone explain what caused them to close?
Sachem has been mismanaging their money for years now. It has finally caught up to them and they are in a serious fiscal crisis. Enrollment is declining, so the decision was made to close 2 elementary schools and 1 middle school to try and save money.
It's merely a band aid on a much bigger problem and in 2 years, they will probably have to go through this yet again.
It's not just mismanagement of funds. A lot is tied to state aid that never came. I'm not in the district, but my sil teachers there. Yes, many will lose their jobs
Actually, Sachem knew how much money it was getting. This is misinformation that the board cleared up a few weeks ago.

The sad reality is that the district has been chopping away at the buildings for years. Those zero percent budgets looked good but in reality, schools were paying the price. We have no technology, classes in the middle and high schools are huge, classes don't run because they don't want to have to pay for them, supplies are scarce, programs have been cut, honors classes gone, etc. Yet we have a fully running sports program.
To that I have to say, my child lost out on 2 years of GATE and I support sports as I think more children benefit and it keeps kids busy and out of trouble.
