Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige

no, but I am always impressed when a young single person buys a house. But that would probably be anywhere.

lately, I feel like there is a level of craziness living here! We could live like royality anywhere else for what we are paying!

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige

Absolutely NOT! I can't find anything prestigious about an old house that's extremely overpriced and having to plunk all my life savings into it to buy it and then living to repair it little by little to make it livable. Or spending an exorbitant amount of money on one that's in living condition already because well, it's in living condition.

Buying a house anywhere it's a huge accomplishment. No matter where, even in North Dakota, it's something not everyone can experience in a lifetime - that pride fill everyone no matter where they buy.

I think the "prestige" thing is something people tell themselves to justify buying in the market right now. Because I guarantee you that those who bought in a normal market (like my SIL's mom who bought her Westbury cape for $135K in 1997 & just had it appraised for over $500K) weren't thinking of "prestige" they merely wanted a place to live. And the prices then were more on par with the rest of the country...it wasn't what it is now.

It's not "defeat" when someone decides to move elsewhere that's cheaper if that decision comes with better odds and a much better quality of life. I for one won't work to pay my mortgage and taxes. It's simply a realization that you can't "play" in the current market and won't. Even if it does go to normal standards (which it must since every expert is predicting so) the houses are still unbelievably over priced for their condition.

Prestigious to me is Southampton, a mansion (a true one, not a "McMansion someone built on a "large" lot next to a bunch of crappy homes), a gated community, private lake front property, an estate, etc. An old house in need of serious repair and updating is not it - doesn't matter where. No matter how much I have to sacrifice to get it. The latter is just what has to be done in order to stay in that market. That alone doesn't make it prestigious, regardless of what homeowners/house hunters tell themselves. JMHO.

see that is what is prestigious to YOU

we all obviously have our on opinons on what is prestigious to them..

to me...owning a home on LI IS prestigious..

i feel that the fact that i worked hard and went to colloge and got my masters is in fact prestigious..
I feel that oening my home on LI was presitigious...

just because others didn't do what i did...doesn't make what they do or what i have done less prestigious..

it was a personal chioce that we all regard highly...NO MATTER HOW MUCH we paid for it, no matter where it is, no matter what the sacrifice was...

FOR ME...and i am suer for a lot of people living on LI it most certainly is an accomplishment..

and i just do not understand WHY OOTers seem to take offense to that...

THEY chose not to live here...they chose to make their lives somewhere else..

is that better for them...SURE
Is the prestigious to them...I HOPE SO..

But you can't put down or say that owning a home on LI ISN"T prestigious to usChat Icon
ETA...and nobody said it was a "defeat" if you moved elsewhere

i just do not get the sensitivityChat Icon

that's the point some of us are saying though- Owning a home Anywhere IS a great accomplishment, BUT, that doing it on LI is not anymore prestigous than doing it anywhere else.

We'll probably always live on LI (unless DH decides to go Federal with his job)... but, its not because we view it as a prestigous place to live, but rather, this is where our friends, family, and life are.

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige

As much as I hate to say it, yes. I think it depends on the neighborhood.

As much as I would love to live off Shelter Rock Road in Manhasset, it just ain't going to happen unless we win lotto!

Buying a house anywhere is an accomplishment and defnitely something to be proud of!

Re: Do you believe that there is a level of prestige

FH and I were talking today - he is down about buying a house bc we went to see his sisters gorgeous house in Shoreham...half acre, four bedroom colonial....but they wouldnt be able to afford it if they hadnt made $100K (yes thats right $100K) in TWO YEARS on their cape in levittown. while I am happy for them...it sucks to be first time homebuyers right now!!

and I would feel a little defeated if we buy out of state, because we really want to live here, its a goal...and if we dont reach that goal we will feel dissapointed.

not that everyone shoudl feel this way, but I will

No offense taken, but my point was clear. It's only "prestigious" now to some because of the market. Those that bought 10 years ago surely weren't thinking of it that way. We tell ourselves many things to justify our decisions.

I'm not putting it down, you maybe see it that way because that's where you're looking to buy and are sensitive to my response. I'm being extremely realistic. Owning any home, anywhere, is a great thing. No matter where. But just because you own a home on LI doesn't make it "prestigious". Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of the word?

pres·tige ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pr-stzh, -stj)
n.
The level of respect at which one is regarded by others; standing.
A person's high standing among others; honor or esteem.
Widely recognized prominence, distinction, or importance: a position of prestige in diplomatic circles.

prestige

n : a high standing achieved through success or influence or wealth etc.; "he wanted to achieve power and prestige" [syn: prestigiousness]

It's not what's prestigious to "me", it's the clear definition of the word. And there's no sensitivy. I chose to move because like I stated earlier, I couldn't justify what my money could buy. There was a choice elsewhere for me. I understand that isn't the case for all, but I was lucky enough to have a choice. Just don't try to rationalize the current market with prestige. There are parts that are in fact exclusive, prestigious, ridiculously expensive for a reason. But not every single home just because it's in LI.

And to answer your other "point"...read below. Yes, it was clearly stated that it was "defeat" to move elsewhere that's "cheaper". I know the OP and i'm really surprised at that kind of thinking. Way too much judgement!

I think so too.

DH's cousin, his wife and kid just moved from LA back to OH. they couldn't afford to buy a house and were renting for $2600 a month! Chat Icon

I told DH that I couldn't help but see that as a “defeat” and that they probably feel like crap that they had to move back home. I think that was a turning point for me... seeing that happen. I told him that if and when we buy a house here, all his relatives in OH can stop placing bets on whether we're going to move there Chat Icon

Sasha... I am not saying that everyone who moves to a less expensive area is defeated.

in DH's cousin's case, that was the last resort for them.

Wow then, we really do tell ourselves what we want to hear.

To feel superior or in "high esteem above others" because of the purchase of a home is a bit jaded, to say the least. Chat Icon

EXACTLY....it is like people who move else where take offense to how highly some people regard living here..

as if their choice to not live here was less some how...

YES i could take the money we have and buy a mansion in the middle of no where...and live quite comfortable...

I think making it here is somethin i chose to do and and PROUD of actually doing it..

i consider it a big accomplishment. Chat Icon

Wow, I am never short of amazed. Jenn, is this not super far stretched? What makes you think that those that move out of LI live "in the middle of nowhere". Chat Icon I just don't get it...it's not defeat (at least not for me and those I know left and are happy) it's triumph! It's a way out of a crazy situation. It's achieving home ownership regardless and if it means exploring other paths, then that's the way to do it. Like others (including myself) have said not everyone can leave (family and friends aren't always luckily in other states) so you do what you have to. But that doesn't make it (owning a home) less wonderful when it happens just because it's out of LI.

I for one live in a major metropolitan city...not NY, but not Fargo either.
