need a roof over me and my son's head

Hello, my name is Marian and my husband passed away 2 yrs ago. I have a 13 yr old son who is my miracle I had him at 44 after losing 7 before him. Now that my husband passed my whole life has been turned upside down, I am having financial difficulties and also big problems where I am living right now. It's abusive to say the least. my son and I have been through enough, I have been searching for a 1 bedroom apt on the Island for the 2 of us to start our lives over but have been turned away from about 150 apts. every time I tell them I have a son. He is a good boy and very quiet. My so called friend that took us in eventually made it known he wanted a relationship with me and everytime I rejected his advances he has been mentally and emotionally abusive with me and then recently with my son.. My heart is breaking I want to give my son a good life but I can't seem to get anywhere. because of my rejection, he retaliated by evicting us. I was supposed to be out a while ago but I guess God is watching ove us for know, I never received the 72 hr notice to get out but it is likely to arrive any day now. I have tried every way I can including my 1st mistake when they told me to go to SS for temporary assistance. it took them a month to get back to me to tell me they denied me because I make too much money on disability. I have called everywhere I could think of and checked for apts 5 times a day and running all over looking but with no luck, I'm just hoping someone out there can help us. I don't know what I will do if I can't find a place for us. I do plan on getting a job when I know where I'll be living, I am allowed to make some money on top of my disability and have more ideas I am determined to make a better life for my son and I will I just need someone to step up and give me a place to start. God Bless all of you

I don't know where you live but out in Suffolk is a place called the Retreat, for abused women. Call them, they can provide shelter and legal assistance for both of you. In queens you can call Safe Horizon both org. will also help you make a plan. Goo luck

I don't know of any apartments, but maybe a local church could help find a match for you?

Facebook moms groups too, specific to individual towns.
SILO is a resource for people with disabilities.
NYhousingsearch.gov

reddit.com/r/almosthomeless

Reddit you sometimes have to sift thru the BS, but the mods of that particular topic site truly seem to care about this issue and people are very resourceful.

Re: need a roof over me and my son's head

Thank you for your reply, however I had already checked the idea of a shelter until I was told that they would keep all my income each month and only give me $40 a month to spend, At that price I could have found a great apartment. I have car insurance and other bills I must pay each month so a shelter is not an option

Thank you, I already posted on a bunch of websites, They answer me but so far I can't find one. Also as far as Silo, I'm already on a list for disability housing just takes more time to get one than I have

SILO is not a disability housing list. They are an advocacy center.

They may know of landlords who are willing to work with you. This info is generally not advertised.

Many things about OP just does not sound right. I can pick almost every so called background fact apart.

She tried EVERY option including churches and decides to post to LI Families? I never knew this site was the last resort.

I call shenanigans.

I just found her name. When I get to the office I'm going to look some more. She may be legit. But maybe not.

What area of the island are you looking at? Western Nassau, Eastern Nassau, Western Suffolk, Eastern Suffolk?
How much are you able to pay per month for an apartment?

I am very sorry you are going through this.

Just a suggestion: As a landlord, I don't think you are having trouble finding a place because of a quiet 13 year old - it's probably because of the income. I would maybe look for a job even though you haven't secured housing. It can't hurt, and from the landlord's POV, it can be viewed as a good faith attempt to stabilize your situation. What field are you in?

Maybe you're right. Maybe she's not legit.

But if she is, you just kicked a person when she's down. I will never understand why someone would want to do that.

Because sadly we have been around long enough to have seen some serious scamming on here. The janets and Kate's, Kathy's and many more shady folks.

I can't say I know much about shelters, but I'd think a legit shelter wouldn't possibly take ALL of your $$ if you produced copies of your car insurance bill, etc. I'm SURE they would allow you to pay for your car so you could get to work! And then it they do take a bit for now, maybe it wouldn't be so bad until you CAN find more stable housing after you obtain a job?? Esp if they also provide food, utilities, etc. Even if you just do it for a month until you have employment and then maybe a landlord would be more willing to take a chance?

She did post under a name on the FB Long Island Moms page yesterday....I know a FB page doesnt make it legit, but its not like she is asking for donations and trying to solicit anything from anyone. Her FB page seems legit though, its not completely private and there are friends/family who respond to her postings about family and her son and old HS/Family pictures that seem legit. There are postings about her late DH and support from family. I think this is completely legit.

I remember once in one of my previous LIF lives there was a women who needed donations for her family and came on here asking. People lost their minds on her, myself and a few other LIFers gave her the benefit of the doubt and she turned out to be COMPLETELY legit and we collected donations and brought them to her house. People called SCAM on her too, but it wasnt.

OP - I dont have any resources to share, but wish you the best.

I've been around too and I am aware of the stories you mention. This woman didn't ask for anything, and no one is offering her anything other than ideas.

Seems like she's just taking a shot at an apartment though. Someone on here that may have a rental.

I have been helping a working couple with bad credit find a place and let me tell you it is a nightmare for them. Two older dependable people with no kids, no pets, very nice stable income, and bad credit from a mortgage that went upside-down with the housing crash- and they get turned down EVERYWHERE. So I could imagine that someone on disability with a teen would be desperate for new avenues.

1st of all I am legit, my story is far more worse than I even wrote. and this wasn't my last hope It's just that someone just told me about it so I figured I would see if anyone knew of anything, You have no idea how many avenues I have been through. If you Like, I could post my eviction notice up if you really need proof, However negativity in my situation is the last thing I need, You should be ashamed of yourselves. You never know what a person has gone through until you walk in their steps. I was supposed to be out June 26th and the only reason I still have a roof over my head is that they haven't come with the 72 hour notice yet.

Ps. this wasn't written about anyone above that offered their advice. I just saw a post where they were saying My story doesn't sound real and are questioning my sincerity Those people should be ashamed of themselves
