my son is tilting his head on one side
we recently noticed that my 6 week old prefers to have his head on one side. he turns his head to that side when he sleeps, when we change him, bathe him. an older friend mentioned that this is something that we need to pay attention to, as we do not want to end up with him having a wry neck i am not sure what to do. does anyone have experience with this? we tried to put him to sleep on his side, and put blankets on the other side, but as we all know this is very dangerous.
any advice?

do more tummy time. swicth arms when you are feeding him. it's sounds as though he is developing early signs of tortocollis...have the ped check him out.

when feeding him a bottle, try holding him the other way, so he will have to turn his head in the other direction. My son had the same problem.

Yes, my ped gave us an exercise to do to stretch the neck muscle. Like they said switch arms when holding and feeding so he's facing a different way each time. This is how dd got a flat spot, but it corrected itself with all the tummy time, stretching,s witching arms and also I put her at a different end of the crib every other night.
Go to the ped and talk to them.

Definitely mention it to your ped! If it is more pronounced, he may need to do some kind of physical therapy. See what your ped says. This is very common and is correctable so try not to freak out!!!!

Re: my son is tilting his head on one side
sounds like it COULD be torticollis. my son had this at 3 months, but i ignored it until 6 months. he got PT through EI and he's perfect now. definitely bring it up to your pediatrician. if it is torticollis call EI and get an evaluation.
in the meantime do LOTS of tummy time...there could never be enough tummy time. hold him while feeding his bottle where it would force him to look the other way. place him in a position to turn the other way when watching tv. when hes sleeping go in and turn his head to the other side. also, massage the neck muscles...it can be tight.
i never heard of torticollis before my son had it but its actually extremely common. especially these days since we're not putting babies down on their bellies to sleep.

Re: my son is tilting his head on one side
First, I know its easier said then done, but don't worry.
DS starting tilting a little bit and I thought nothing of it. I started to notice it more and brought it up to his ped. My insurance covers 15 visits per year with a physical therapist without a preauthorization. But I did need the ped to write a referral.
We went and saw Kelly Settani in bellmore ( http://www.bellmorept.com/) she showed me some stretches to do with DS, gave me some tips and stretched him a bit herself. After 4 or 5 appointments DS's neck was MUCH better. She agreed and said to come back if I felt he was getting worse again. I continued the stretches at home for a while after that, and never felt the need to bring him back.
Start by doing what the other posters said, hold him on your other arm, put him the other way in his crib, do more tummy time (not necessarily longer duration, just more frequently)
Talk to your ped, check your insurance in regards to physical therapy and if its really bad, you can have him evaluated for early intervention and get services through the county.

I agree! We noticed my sons head tilting when he was 3 months and it turned out to be toricillis. He had PT 2x a week until he was almost a year! Now at almost 3, you'd never know!

Re: my son is tilting his head on one side
My nephew had the same thing. Just try not to favor the side he tilts too. And put some kind of light toy in his rib so he tilts his head the other way. My nephew is 1yrs old and completely fine now! : )

Sounds like torticollis to me too. Don't panic though. It's very fixable.
I'd make an appointment with a chiropractor who treats peds. My friend is a chiro & I know she's helped several of our friends' infants.

Re: my son is tilting his head on one side
i have a question to those who said do more tummy time. first, what do i need him to do during tummy time? make sure he rotates his head in both directions? or tummy time itself is enough?
also, i find it difficult yo find time for tummy time, so i need advice. he is now eating every 3h. so, you can not do it after food. he eats slowly, then we burp him and hold him vertically. it all takes about 1.5h. then we try to put him to sleep. so, this is the only time i can use, but then i will be taking away his sleep time? is it ok? also, i can wake him up before feeding, but i feel bad about it, as sometimes he is not easily falls asleep, so once he is sleeping, i do not want to wake him up.
i am obviously new to this, so any help is appreciated

Re: my son is tilting his head on one side
yes lay with him and move around to each ear and talk to him. Make sure he is turning from side to side. Hole up a toy and move it from side to side and see if it catches his attention. This is for when he gets a little older but you can start now.
I would just do TT when she was awake. Any 2 minutes we had. Maybe try 1 minute before you put him back down for a nap. he won't last very long, so it shouldn't mess up his nap time.
