How would you feel about this:

On Saturday, a group of us "work friends", along with other of our friends and family (non work) participated in the Color Run. Had a Blast..

The Bosses at our company saw pics and want to post it on their social media to boost the company's image.

Some of us are against that, as it was not in any way a company sponsored event (and they did have the chance for it to be...). We all paid our own registration and created our own team and t-shirts etc.

They say now after the fact "oh, we'll make a donation to the charity" because it will look good for the company that we did this.

How would you feel about this?

{There is a bit of background, but I want to see if it is coloring my view (and that of a few of my co-workers) on the situation - so for now I'll leave it out.}

Without knowing all the details, it does sound to me like it will come across as them taking credit for it regardless if they say it. That would bother me. Maybe going forward they should arrange something like this.

I agree with both PP.

And it's kind of bothering me that they want to use this because it will make the company look good. Don't like the way that sounds. Do it because you support the cause. Not to make you look good.

It would bother me. Maybe my experience at my own office is making me biased, but it just seems like they want the pat on the back and the "hey look at us, we're charitable and healthy" without doing any of the actual work. Not cool.

On a side note- did you do the night run?? I did the glitter one at Citifield in May, but I would've preferred the night run! It just wasn't advertised yet when I bought the other tix! Boooo!

I would NOT let them use the picture. They didn't sponsor when they had the chance to it is not theirs to use now. No matter how it is captioned viewers will see it as a company sponsored event.

I agree with this. To me, I see it as a bunch of friends got together to participate in the event (and some of you happen to work together as you mentioned some families were there too). This has nothing to do with the company (other than a group of you happen to work together). Not on company time, not company t-shirts, not company sponsored, etc. and it would really bother me if they posted this (plus I hate social media anyway).

Before I read the background info I was going to say it would be silly for you to not let them use the picture.

After reading, NOPE !

It would bother me, but if, as a pp said, they post the pics with something along the lines of "'X company employees participated in the event' and how proud they are of you all etc." and actually made a decent donation, I would let them use the pics. In the long run, something good ( a donation) will come out of it and then maybe next year, the company will sponsor your group (if that is something you would want).

yes it is. part of the proceeds (i forgot the %) does go to charity, but not all.

to the OP, i think it all depends in how they caption it.

if it gave them credit, that's wrong. If they are just trying to show that their employees have fun together, sure why not. It may not be work related, but would you know your co-workers if you did not work there? your friendship were formed through the job, and that is something the company can take credit for.

Re: How would you feel about this:

How about reimbursing all staff the registration fee and that way it would actually be company sponsored....

I agree with this thought process.

If they want to put it as "Our employees like to have fun outside of work together!" Ok.

The way you said it in the OP, it sounds like, hey our employees are charitable, maybe we can take credit for it..... F that

I agree.

I'd probably be annoyed but let them use it.

Re: How would you feel about this:

I would not be happy about it. The only way I would be ok with it is if the company reimbursed the entry fees and made a donation to the charity.

Re: How would you feel about this:

Thanks... I too am of the feeling that they shouldn't use the photo (and they aren't as of now because a few of us object)...

If they want to reimburse my registration and costs for shirts etc.. then I guess fine... but they HAD a chance to do that. I think I'm uncomfortable with the back peddling because after they realize it would look good for them.
