Ethnic Diversity and kids

Are they dressed in traditional clothing to their background? Or are these just 2 people in jeans and a t-shirt?

I'm sure if you showed kids a photo of Freida Pinto compared to Kerry Washington--no--they would have no idea which was of Indian vs African American descent.

Ethnic Diversity and kids

I agree with the comment about many high school kids being blissfully ignorant. How is it they get so far in school and haven't picked up what to me is basic information? Who is to blame? Teachers, their parents? Themselves? Probably all three. My kids learned about the Boer War in South Africa from their teachers, but I talked to them about other African countries also having different skin colors and ethnicities in them. It's critical that Americans become more aware of the world because it is getting smaller every day.

Yes, I would expect it. My eight year olds know the difference.

Unfortunately, LI is one of the most segregated places in the entire country. I'm amazed at the diversity in my SIL's neighborhood in Wisconsin. I talk to my kids about this all of the time but then again I teach World History and am raising them in a very diverse and open faith community.

It is ultimately the parents' responsibility at this age. I'm not saying run out and make sure your circle of friends meets the population distribution of the UN but:

1. educate yourself about different cultures. Even if you just google or search for a reputable video on youtube so you can better explain the difference to your kids.

2. have a globe or world map displayed in your home.

3. read books and see movies centered around other cultures.

We live in a global world, a global world where most of us on this website are a "minority" compared to the rest of the world. Knowledge and "hearing each other's stories" is the best way to enlighten ourselves and prepare children for their future.

Re: Ethnic Diversity and kids

Honestly, it depends on what they are exposed to.
For a kid in a very culturally diverse school, who has friends of both backgrounds, yes, I'd expect that they would have learned from their friends the differences in the cultures, as well as the physical differences. Not becaus it MATTERS with a negative connotation, but because it matters as a part of who they are.

I went to a very small HS where the diversity was ......Italian, Irish, Jewish .......
I went college with a very large Asian population .......I had sorority sisters who were Japanese, Korean, and Chinese - you can bet they schooled the white girl in 'how to tell the difference' physically based on what they loved and hated about their own physical features.

and it does matter, and it should matter.
Everyone is proud of their culture, their background, of who they are and where their families come from. Knowing the difference is important, in that respect.

I always think of Clueless:

Cher: Lucy, the fire department called again. They said we need to clear out that bush. You said you'd get Jose to do it.
Lucy: He your gardener, I don't know why you no tell him.
Cher: Lucy, you know I don't speak Mexican.
Lucy: I NOT A MEXICAN.
Lucy: [storms off]
Cher: Great, what was that all about?
Josh: Lucy's from El Salvador.
Cher: So?
Josh: So, it's an entirely different country.
Cher: What does that matter?
Josh: You get mad if anyone thinks you live below Sunset.

Love it!

I went to school in a very non-diverse area and I have a memory clear as day being in 1st grade and one of my friends asking me why I was "hanging around with a black girl"

I don't remember noticing what she looked like until it was pointed out to me.

Yes, if they are exposed to diversity. I knew in third grade after moving back to NY.

I love this Chat Icon Who ever thought Clueless would be so relevant? It helped me out with Shakespeare in college (that Polonius guy...to thine own self be true).

I'm not sure that my son (5) knows the difference, but he has one Indian boy and one African American boy in his class.. he has only observed that they both have brown skin.
