Ethnic Diversity and kids

Would you expect a 9 yo child on LI to know the difference between a person of African descent and a person of East Indian descent? Like know there are differences in how they look aside from that they have brown skin?

Some towns on LI are not diverse at all. Guess it depends on where they are from, but no I would not expect a 9 year old to know.

Re: Ethnic Diversity and kids

I think it depends on who they hang out with and what is being discussed.

A lot of 9-year-olds may have older siblings and from what I've been told this stuff is discussed in convo more as they get older.

No and I see no reason why they should know. We are all American no matter what we look like.

Not sure about 9 year olds, but I know 7 year olds don't really know the difference. My kids are of east indian descent, and during Black History Month some kids innocently told DS he wouldn't be in the same classroom as them if it weren't for Martin Luther King Chat Icon Let's just say, it made for a very productive class conversation with the teacher. She told us that geography of other countries wasn't covered until later in the curriculum. Initially, I was shocked, but then I really wasn't surprised. DS is the only person of east indian descent in his class, and some kids just assumed he was African American. It still struck a nerve with me though.

Re: Ethnic Diversity and kids

It's hard to answer this question without context but, no, I wouldn't. I would hope that my children would just see another child like them and not be focused on how they are different. I don't live on a diverse area at all but my kids see all their peers as just that. I have never heard either of my children identify someone by whether they were white, black, Indian, Asian etx and I think that is how it should be.

If they have a diverse class makeup than yes. If not no.

My elementary class in Queens had everyone so I knew from way back. But if your class is not diverse I think its impossible to expect a 9 year old to know.

no, I don't think kids see people as different at that age, especially if you are talking about kids playing with kids

I would say no but not because of lack of diversity. I don't think children, at least at that age, really pay attention to race and skin that closely.

My 6 yo asked about an older child and described him as black. I explained that the older boy was Indian, not black. He just didn't get it, and really seemed confused by what I was telling him. They don't get it just yet, and they don't care either!

A 9 year old?!?! NO WAY! I teach high school social studies and the conversations I have with my students are insane -- students are shocked every year to find out that not everyone in Africa is black -- throw in that the whites in South Africa speak English with British accents and their minds are BLOWN. I fear for the future of our country......

Fear for the future, really? My neighborhood elem school is 90% Caucasian and 10% Asian. When kids are older, working, in college and out of their immediate neighborhoods they will meet people from all walks of life. What is to fear?

I was referring to the stupidity level of your average high school student nowadays. Things that used to be common sense no longer are, they are largely completely unaware of current events, both locally, domestically, and internationally -- what's worse is that they are perfectly content not knowing anything. That is what scares me.

I guess this answer is only relative to ones exposure. In diverse areas where there is more exposure, I can see them knowing. In less diverse areas, probably not. But I also think the bigger picture is that we should also be teaching our children that there are different cultures instead of lumping them into groups just based on skin color.

Re: Ethnic Diversity and kids

My older son is 6 and he would know. He seems to know where everyone from his class is from including kids who recently immigrated from Europe. He has friends of mixed descent and knows very clearly where they are from. i.e. He has a friend who is half Egyptian and half German. I recently bought a globe and when we looked at India, he immediately said his friend Suraj is from India.

Sounds like you are in a more diverse area, so your DC is exposed to different people.

Depends on who the 9 year old is growing up / going to school with.
