Had my 1st mammogram I have a question
I had my 1st mammogram and they just called me to tell me they want me to get a ultrasound done of my breast? Anyone ever have to do this? They said its normal to get a call back to get another test done.

Had my 1st mammogram I have a question
My mom ALWAYS has to go for U/S after mammo's. The one time I had an U/S of my breasts, my doctor skipped the mammo entirely (I was 20 I think and felt something). It's totally normal. The mammo really isn't all that clear, and if you have cystic breasts, you are going to have to often go for that u/s after the mammo.

My mom always has to get an ultrasound after a mammo. Makes me wonder why they don't just skip the mammo and go straight to an ultrasound.

I felt a lump once, I was 27 I think and they just did a sonogram, no mammogram. it was nothing, so I would not worry at all. I think being sent for a sonogram is very common

I always have a sono after the mammo because I have dense breast tissue.
Nothing to worry about.

I automatically get a sono after a mammogram. Since I was 30, this is my routine. Good luck

When I did my mamo this year my dr also requested the sono the same day. I think its the norm!
We can't be too careful with our boobies!

common, especially for the baseline (first) mamo as they have nothing to compare the information to - same thing happened to me, turns out I just have dense breasts which could make problem areas harder to detect

It's because all these places paid all this money for the mammo machines that the industry can't afford to just "skip" it, so they do the mammo and then the u/s even though the u/s is WAY BETTER diagnostically.

Oh, especially if they didn't book you until the 18th! Likely just a baseline.

I have very dense breasts. I am always scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound at the same time. So if you didn't know that going in, I wouldn't be too worried that they're calling you back in. The ultrasound just gets a clearer view.

Mammograms are worthless per my Dr. I always have a sono done after my mamo. As pp said doesn't sound like it's a rush so you should be good. Now that you know this when you schedule your yearly make sure to schedule them together.

Ask if you have dense breast tissue. They are supposed to tell you because dense tissue is harder to look into and detect problems and tumors can be hidden in them. You are probably fine, but it is important for you to know what you have so that you can be certain you do get a sonogram each time, if you have dense tissue.

This isn't totally accurate. U/S is excellent at looking at things like lumps or cysts. It should not replace a mammo. U/S cannot for example look at microcalcifications. Microcalcifications can be a red flag of something serious. They are only detectable on mammos. Also they do not see as deep into the breast. U/S are a great tool, but are only as good as the tech performing them. So a lesser skilled tech can miss things.
A lot of people do both mammo's and sono's. I always do both. Some people also do MRI's as well.

Sorry to hijack but I have had 2 mammo's done and the last time they said I had dense breasts. I called my OB and asked if I should have an ultrasound and he said no. I am 43 - should I insist on an U/S after this year;s mammo? TIA

its painless and way more accurate. My moms surgeon says they should just go right to ultrasounds for everyone.
