Very upset - tree limb in yard

I am so upset. We came home from work and a huge, heavy tree limb had fallen in our front yard in the exact spot where my daughter and I were sitting/playing in her baby pool just this past weekend.

It is huge and HEAVY. We live in the Woods section of a neighborhood so we are surrounded by trees and I have always been nervous when it is windy but I feel sickened that this is in the exact spot we always play in. My husband thinks I am being dramatic and ridiculous but I feel like we can't even play outside anymore. I took a picture of the tree limb but this doesn't reflect on how huge it is bc my husband broke it in 2 pieces. I made him put it back in the spot bc I wanted a picture of it.

I had JUST read a story on FB about a child who was struck my a tree limb when he was at daycare and has severe brain damage so this is making me even more upset.

Am I over-reacting? I want the main tree taken down, my husband thinks I am crazy. Would you DO something? I feel mad and I am pi$$ed at my husband that he thinks I am being ridiculous.

i'd be afraid, too. I wont park my car under a tree. I will walk an extra few blocks just to avoid this. Is there an area where you CAN be outside with your daughter not directly above trees?

If the limb fell.off on a day like today when there was minimal wind. I would be very concerned about dead branches/limbs just snapping off. I do not think you're overreacting at all. I would have it at least looked at. But most likely I would have it removed.

i had someone come trim one of my trees to remove all dead limbs. maybe thats a good compromise? unless you really want the tree down, then go for that.

Re: Very upset - tree limb in yard

Have an arborist come to inspect the tree. He/she can tell you whether it needs to come down or whether trimming limbs is enough.

We had a limb come down during a storm and then a smaller limb came down. My DH wanted to take the tree down but I didn't so I had an arborist come look at it. He noticed a crack high up on the tree and immediately suggested we take the tree down. My son's swing was on one of the tree limbs. It was sad when they cut it down but safety was paramount.

Don't take tree down completely -- have company come to remove dead limbs like others suggested. If you and DD play outside in that area, removing the entire tree would mean losing a lot of shade. I think this is the best compromise.

I would have some one come check the tree and trim it. If you do decide to take the tree down check with your town before doing so- depending on where you live you may need to get permission.

We talked and agree with all of you that we are going to have someone come asap to look at the tree and then decide if it needs to be cut down or majorly trimmed. Thanks for all the sane advice everyone!

I think you are over reacting. Not at being upset but regarding taking the tree down. Trim if need be. The limb in the pictures does not look that big but Im sure to you it seems like a ton.

Too many trees are removed on LI. Some area look like the city.

Re: Very upset - tree limb in yard

I understand your fears. I worry about stuff like that too. I moved to an area with loads of huge trees and so I have to be honest and say, is this the actual limb you are referring to? Because to me that is a large twig. I mean, if you see the limbs that come around by me, or the trees we have lost, you would realize this is overreaction in this case. I honestly don't mean to diminish your fears, but this is not a large branch by any means.

I agree. I would have someone check it out and trim as needed.

I know the Facebook story you are following, have seen it too and actually made a comment to my DH that we have to get some limbs cut off. Get the tree looked at and see if any branches look dead. And don't hang out under them on windy days (I don't let my DC out under them on windy days).

Very upset - tree limb in yard

I don't think you're overreacting. A 4 year old died years ago at a local camp as he sat waiting for the bus. The tree appeared perfectly heathy and the limb wasn't dead It was infested with bugs that were eating away at it from inside. It's really not worth it to be passive about it. Better safe than sorry, especially dealing with a child involved.

Re: Very upset - tree limb in yard

I would be upset too.

My dh was a paralegal years back and worked on a case where a contractor was walking onto a driveway when a tree lifted from its roots and fell on him on a nice sunny non windy day. He was in a coma for a very long time and eventually died. My dh worries about trees and its why last year we cut most of our trees down.

If the tree is losing large branches on nice day like today I would be worried and would have the tree removed.

I think this is a good idea. We have 3 old, large trees in our yard and we have the same fears (and I also know the FB story you are referring to). We have a company come every other year and trim off the dead branches so we don't have to worry so much about it. Chat Icon

ITA. I ended up having to remove a tree in my backyard b/c it was infested with carpenter ants.

Better off having it checked out and it doesn't take much, sadly, to seriously injure or worse when it comes to head trauma. I know this first-hand. You can suffer a bleed on the brain from the smallest of bumps - a branch like that can easily kill a person. So, you have every right to be worried and I would look into it -- trimming the branches, making sure there's nothing dead or being eaten away, etc. Why not? Can't hurt.

Re: Very upset - tree limb in yard

You can't worry about everything so if there ARE any branches that look unstable, I would try and cut them down but not worry about it and enjoy your time outside with your child Chat Icon
