I would go to the shower...hopefully it would be this person's ONLY shower. The kids will have more bday parties. If you think your DD will enjoy the gym place, why not make a date with the birthday child and go to the gym place for an "open play" time.

Definitely the shower. DS is missing a birthday party next Saturday because it is my BFF's baby shower and it is co ed so DH is going too. Like others have said, there are so many birthday parties in a child's life, and you committed to the shower first. I would go for the whole thing.
