One Month Old...Few Questions

How old was your child before he/she slept through the night?

Right now, my son sleeps for about 3 hours straight before he wakes up and wants to eat. He is on Alimentum due to a milk protein allergy and eats about 4oz at each feeding. We have added in an extra half-ounce to the last feeding before we go to bed (10-11pm) to try to get him to last longer--we get about 4 hours at most. We have also tried to space out feedings, especially during the day, (as per my pediatrician) to get him used to going in longer intervals. Any other suggestions?

Also, we have started to notice that my son gets very grunty once we put him down after the 5-5:30am feeding. I usually end up picking him up, reclining on the couch with him on my chest and he stops/falls asleep. I'm wondering if this is partially due to reflux (which I plan on talking to my doctor about at the next visit). Do you know of any solutions to keep him slightly angled? He hates his swing and doesn't love his bouncer seat.

My son is 2.5 and doesn't consistently sleep through the night!

Sleep patterns change so I wouldn't worry about it. They all get to it on their own time. My DS didm;t do it until 4 months and then that was only once for another few months.

At around 2 months, DD started sleeping longer stretches overnight- from 11-7ish. Grunting was very normal for her in the beginning. I always tried to keep her upright for about 15-20 minutes before laying her down after a feeding, but the Rock n Play is great for keeping them on an incline. Hang in there!

My DD started to sleep though the night around three months old. At one month old she usually got two feedings overnight- she had terrible reflux early on and my pediatrician suggested holding her upright for 30 minutes after each feeding and it really helped.

IMO, 1 month old is WAY too early to expect anything more than 3 hour intervals at night. Their bellies are tiny and they are growing fast, so they require food often.

DS began sleeping better around 10 weeks, I believe, and then sttn around 3 months. But he would still wake up for 1 feeding sometimes.

My girls slept in the rock n play or bouncy seat to keep elevated. The ate every 3/4 hrs. I'd feed at 9:30, 12:30, 4:30, 8:30. etc. They dropped the 12:30 at about 7 weeks on their own. Then I discontinued the 4:30 around 6 mo b/c they were waking again at 6:30 anyway. So they didn't sttn until 6 mo. Might have been earlier if I took that 4:30 feeding away.

I think waking every three hours or so at that age is normal. Ds is 7 weeks and gives me 5-6 hour stretches. But dd at this age was going every 3 hours.
If you think he's waking out of habit and not hunger try offering a pacifier.

In regards to reflux, holding them upright for 20-30 mins is best but exhausting! You can get a crib wedge (or use blankets to get the crib up on an incline) that may help

I was very strict on feeding DS every 4 hours. When he could not last 4 hours, we upped the ounces per feeding. He started skipping his middle of the night feeding around 8 weeks so would eat at 11pm, then again at 7am.

I think that it depends on the child. My dd1 is 2yrs and she still doesn't sleep thru the night where my 4 month old just started to. Dd2 eats every 3 hrs and her last feeding is 6oz and she's down around 9pm then she sleeps 6-7 hours straight. I do know that @ 2 months my daughter was very grunty and she still does spit up. I used to hold her when she was grunty, cranky till she fell asleep. I learned to keep her laying down after a feed because as soon as you pick her up she stops up. Dr said it's probably an under developed stomach spincter that she will grow out of. I have no other advice but maybe try gripe water after feeding it seems to work for us. Sometimes

At one month, DS was waking up all the time - at least 3 times per night. DS started sleeping for longer stretches at 7 weeks when I changed his swaddle to one of those velcros ones instead of the traditional blankets. He would sleep from 10-4. After that feeding, he would sleep until 8. At 10.5 weeks (last week!), he started sleeping 9:30-6:30 or 7:30.

A book I read said to space out intervals, but said to only start that at about 8 weeks. DS is now 11.5 weeks and I still feed on demand and he sleeps well. Sometimes that means feeding him every hour. He is EBF and pretty much nurses every hour from 6 pm-9 pm. It may be different with FF babies.
