breakfast debate, your thoughts

Dd is 2 and she usually eats well. This morning was especially tough for me with having both girls up several different hours of the night.
Then at 5:45 she wanted to go down and eat. She is whiny and crying and I am trying to keep dd2 sleeping so I give in. She wanted ice cream for breakfast so after 5 minutes of her crying over that she said pasta. So I made her pasta. Cooked it@ 6am. Dh said that I was wrong for making pasta cause I am setting a precedence. I get that, but my 3 hrs of sleep body wanted the crying to stop.

My argument is. this...if I had left over pasta in the fridge I would have heated that up and given it. I don't see anything wrong with eating other foods for breakfast.

DH: we should only offer cereal, oatmeal or eggs. Anything else is asking for trouble.

It's my first child so im winging it.
Am I in the wrong? Creating a monster.

I don't think you're wrong either! when my son was 2 and a horrible eater he would eat chicken nuggets for breakfast.

I agree with the PP's. You did nothing wrong. Better than eating cookies and candy.
You are not creating a monster. I always say to pick and choose your battles.

BTW... I was the worst eater when I was younger. We all change, grow up a bit, try new things, etc.

Crashing! I raised my sister from about 6 months to 9 years, she had allergies and major food issues. Her breakfast almost daily was pasta, that was until she discovered tyson chicken nuggests. That's basically all she ate until about 5/6 years old. Now, at 15 almost 16, she eats just about anything, she'll try anything once.

We've recently starting giving dinner foods for breakfast in hopes DS will start eating them. I see nothing wrong with it! Food is food.

Nothing wrong with pasta for breakfast ... now if you had given in and let her eat ice cream, that'd be a different story.

Food is food - doesn't matter if it's technically a breakfast food or not.

I never have an issue with breakfast but I am of the thought "you pick and choose your battles". pasta for breakfast in the big picture is a battle that I wouldn't fight.

What about waffles, French toast sticks or pancakes. All frozen and easy to make at any hour.

DH's cousin would only eat raw hot dogs when he was younger. 3 meals a day, raw hot dogs. I had friend who would only eat dry, cooked pasta or the fruit on the bottom yogurt, but he would only eat the yogurt part on top. Wouldn't eat the fruit and wouldn't eat just plain or vanilla yogurt. It had to be the fruit on the bottom kind, even though he didn't mix it or eat that part.

Now, they are both full grown adults with incredible palates. I say you did nothing wrong and kids eating is just one of those things. You pick your battles and hope they grow out of it!

Crashing....

Let DH deal with it then if it is so easy, while you go back to sleep.

My darling nephew did not eat veggies, had sliced apples with his lunch and dinner.
Today at 16 he is still a picky eater like his mom was - but at least he eats.

Food is food. I often eat non breakfast foods for breakfast. As long as your DD is eating something healthy why does it matter? I agree with the pp who said have you DH handle it.

I don't think it is a big deal that you gave her pasta.

Lessons I have learned from the past though, you were giving into to her. It doesn't seem big now, but it is hard to break habits like that. I give 2 choices for breakfast and lunch, dinner has 2 choices also eat or don't. My youngest is 3 and all 3 of my kids have gone to bed with no dinner because that is what they choose. They may not like what I make all the time but they need to try it.

I also get you had a rough night, I have BTDT with my first 2 being a year apart and you cave just for sanity, it's just something to think about. Chat Icon

No way would I make anything for my tiny terror at that time. She also doesn't get any choices at home or daycare. She eats what she's served and it's the same time everyday. I agree with your husband. Butttttttt my dh would do anything to keep our dd from crying.
You just need to do what works for you and your family

Sometimes it is pure survival! I would not give pasta for breakfast on a regular basis.
But I have been known to give them an extra cracker or two if it means me keeping my sanity and preventing one more breakdown-for all of us.
The girls are almost 2 and they know limits/boundaries and we do not eat it regularly.

Food is food. I personally don't like to eat anything but breakfast food in the morning but if my kids would only eat pasta then that's what I would make them. We have "Breakfast for Dinner" nights sometimes so what's the difference? If he doesn't like it then tell him he's free to get up the next time and fight that battle while you sleep.

I think this depends on how you feel about the issue (what she can eat for breakfast). I am pretty laid back about the food thing but I know my kids - if I give in once they will ask all the time and it becomes even hardier to deal with once they know you let them do it before lol.

Is breakfast normally a battle with her? My DD loves breakfast food so, no, I wouldnt give in and make her pasta if thats what she asked for. She gets 2 or 3 choices every morning and thats it.
