Worried about dd's weight.

My dd just turned 3 and she's 26 lbs. is that even normal? I'm pretty concerned. The ped has never been concerned and has never said anything. She has always been really small (only 6lbs, 10 oz at birth) and always around 5th percentile in weight. I can't help but be concerned, also because she's a poor eater. She's very intelligent though- above average, so I'm not concerned in that regard. Did any of you have this problem?

Re: Worried about dd's weight.

At his 4 year appointment my DS was only 30 lbs. It was concerning to my ped because he was also 30 lbs. at his 3 year appointment, meaning he gained no weight in that year. However, he grew 2 inches. They had us come in for a weight check 6 months later and he had actually gained 2 lbs in that amount of time. I think they are only concerned when there is a sudden change in weight, such as not gaining for a while. If your DD has always been tiny, maybe she's just a tiny kid! I wouldn't worry if your ped hasn't mentioned anything.

Worried about dd's weight.

My ds is over 2 and only 23 lbs. he has always been under the 5th %.

My ped said not to worry as he has always been on the same curve. He just takes after my DH. A beanpole.

Sounds like DS. Small DS will be 3 at the end of the month and he too is barely 26 pounds. Tall though! And super smart, imo. So I'm not worried.

Your doctor would bring it up if it was an issue I'd think. I don't see a need to be concerned right now, but can understand why you would be. If she's happy and on track developmentally, then she's probably doing just fine. Some kids are just smaller than others.

Re: Worried about dd's weight.

My oldest was also 26lbs at her 3yr appt and the Ped wasn't concerned. She has always been petite (always in the 5-10%) but she follows her own curve so she was never worried. Now shes 4 and weighs 30lbs. The Ped was actually happy she managed to gain 4lbs in a year lol but she also grew 2.5in. Shes just tall and thin!

Worried about dd's weight.

My DD is only 1.5, but she's still not even 19lbs, always been in the 5th percentile. I've never worried about her weight. She is an incredible eater though, I have no clue where all the food goes. She must have the metabolism of a cheetah or something.

Exactly this! My oldest dd is tiny she will be 4 very soon and she just broke the. 30lbs mark. She has always been tiny but she is growing on a curve and is healthy.

DD is 3.5 and she is still only 26-27lbs. She is very petite and has always been in the 5th percentile. Our ped isn't concerned at all about her weight. If the ped is not concerned, I would not be worried.

Same. My oldest has always been around 20% and her weight and height are progressing evenly (and taking after her dad Chat Icon ), so we've been told there's no problem...she's just on the smaller side.

Worried about dd's weight.

My DD was 17 pounds at a year, 22 pounds at 2, 28 at 3 and a hair under 30 at 4! She has always been in the 10th percentile for weight. Pediatrician was not concerned.

Re: Worried about dd's weight.

My kids have always been on the skinny side and then my third child was not even on the growth charts at 6 months old. After so much testing, evaluations, they ruled that she's normal.

I'm in the camp that if she's happy, healthy and meeting milestones, she's fine. Some kids are just smaller than others!

You can't control her growth rate but you can make sure every calorie you offer counts and indulge her in her favorite healthy foods.

Re: Worried about dd's weight.

Ask your ped. If they aren't concerned then I wouldn't be either. Did they chart her and is she on her same curve? I'm not sure if they stop the percentiles at 2. My DD went down a few percent last mo b/c she got taller and didn't gain much, but they weren't concerned. They basically said it's their body type (tall and thin). I'll take it and live vicariously through them. lol

I'd say most toddlers eat poorly and thin out around 2/3.
