could use some advice...

So, I live in an apartment complex. My son is 4, almost 5. He plays with the other kids in the neighborhood. There is this one boy, who I've written about before. He is a bully. My son is not allowed to play with him. He is older, maybe 7-8.

Flash forward, Saturday night/Sunday morning, someone stole my sons scooter off of our patio. It was pretty much brand new. He got it for Christmas. Now this kid, the bully all of a sudden has the same exact one. My son asked him if it was his, he said no and when on this long story. I told him we will check.our cameras to.see who stole it. We don't have cameras, I was trying to scare him. Joping he would bring it back if he indeed stole it.

His mom is def the "not my kid" kind of mom. I am so bad at confrontation. How.do I approach this withou flat out accusing this.kid? My dh says we shoukd.just steal it back. But, I don't actually know.he stole.it.

Please give me.advice!!

ETA. You would think the mom would notice he has a new scooter and question where.he got it, but she seems like the kind of mom tobelieve whatever her son says. He could have said he borrowed it or.someone.gave it to.him. l

Yikes, that's tough. If you know the mom, you might ask, "Oh, where did Johnny get the new scooter?" Even if she is the type to have her head in the sand about his personality, she should at least have an answer to that. If she says some other kid gave it to him, you can just ask more questions, like wow...why? Or something like that. And then see where the conversation goes, perhaps leading her into seeing that he kid stole the scooter from your patio. If she says some other kid gave it to him, and you don't believe that, would you feel comfortable asking that other kid/mother? I know, it's tough...I too am very non-confrontational. If you can't do those things, and you're sure he took your DS's scooter, I'd go with your DH's idea and steal it back! And this time, put his name on it with stickers, or some other type of identifier. My DH bought a dremel, and engraves stuff like that with names!

The other mom might not notice or just think that your son let her son borrow it. I would approach her by assuming her son was borrowing it and tell her you guys need it back now. If she bought it for her son, she will tell you. Are there any stickers or anything personal on the scooter that your son would recognize?

It has no identifying marks. I was thinking of asking rhe mom if she has noticed anything missing off of her patio. I will explain to her someone stole my sons scooter and give a description. Hopefully, if the scooter in question is my sons, it will be returned. This stinks. My son is so upset.

That's what I would do. That way you're not accusing her son but making her aware that your sons scooter went missing right when her son had a new scooter out of nowhere.

So sorry this happened to your son Chat Icon

You're letting this 7 year old bully you, too! Stick up for your son. Go to the parents and explain what happened and take the scooter back.

Is your patio enclosed? Can you lock your son's toys up? For the future, I wouldn't leave his toys outside unattended.

Ugh, I know. I just don't know 100%, so I don't want to look like a fool if she says, "we just bought this for him" in my heart and my gut, I know he took it. I told my husband I feel like a terrible mom because I won't just go get it back.

Our patio is not enclosed. We have no space inside for the toys out there. I did, however, go and write our last name with a black sharpie on everything in hidden spots.

This may be nuts but can't you file a police report for the stolen bike ? I would be livid. Bikes/scooters aren't cheap.

I like this idea because you aren't accusing her son of something bad

I would do this. If she pulls the "not my kid" crap, she's a poor excuse for a parent.
