Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

DD is almost 6 and DS is almost 4. We are debating getting a swingset for our backyard. A part of me feels like we should have gotten this a couple of years ago for them to really enjoy it. I don't know how many more years they would play with it. A neighbor has a 10 year old and a 7 year old and I barely see their kids out there. A few years ago they were there all the time but now my neighbors have a permanent fixture in their backyard that is not being used. However, DD and DS keep asking for one. Any thoughts? Do your kids use the swingset or was it exciting at first and not used as much? TIA!

I would get one.

We played on ours as kids for YEARS.

My DD got her first one at age 3 then we upgraded at age 4. She 5 1/2 now and LOVES her swingset, she's on it all the time when she's in the yard.

Every one of our neighbors with kids has one.
I see them used about twice a year.

We have a park two blocks away from us (walking) and a big park a 2 minute drive away.

I've been questioning this too. I finally talked DH into getting one but we're not ready to pull the trigger yet. DD is almost 3 and I'm afraid we're going to spend all this money on a swing set and she will barely use it. We have a decent sized yard so space isn't the issue, it's just that it will be there all the time and she wont use it. We have a few parks pretty close to us too so I don't know if its really worth the money.

I say get one. My twins are 3.5 and my DS is almost 2. They play on our swingset every day. Between my kids and our nieces and nephews there are two 2 year olds, three 3 year olds, a 5 year old, 6 year old and an 8 year old. We all have swing sets in our yard and all the kids (including the 8 year old) LOVE playing on the swing set. They are out there at least every weekend playing on it and every chance they get during the week.

It's not my thing.
I would rather just take her to the park.
I feel like it's a lot of money for something she will only get a few years out of and I am not a fan of how it looks in the yard.

Re: Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

I vote yay. My boys are 4 and 2 (will be 5 and 3 this summer). We got it last summer and I felt that didn't use it as much last summer bc my little one didn't want to go up the ladder much. Once the weather got nice they've been running to play in it every time we go outside. Keeps them and their friends occupied for a while. They have plenty of other outside toys to play with as well, but then when they get tired of that they go back to the swingset. Even though we go to parks and other big swing sets I feel like having one in our own backyard is easiest when I can't take them places. Play with it when they get home from school or running errands. If one is sick the other can go out and play. The swing sets they make now are so cool with other toys they can play with. DS1 likes to pretend it's a clubhouse.

this. Hate what it does to the yard and really not going to be used as much as you'd think so we skipped it.

My uncle has a swing set up between two trees for her. Right now its still a novelty but even so, she only uses it maybe one day over a 3 day weekend?

I had a play house and a slide and seriously the damage caused because I didn't move that house every day or the grass inside it grew or ant hills liked to build up against and below it. Ugh. I can't wait to trash them.

We went back and forth forever on this when my girls were that age and my son was 1. In the end we decided against it. I think my main reason was that I like to be able to leave them in the yard by themselves to play without hawking them constantly and I just feel that it would only be a matter of time before someone got kicked in the head by one of their siblings on a swing...accidentally or intentionally Chat Icon

Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

I say yay --IF your kids like spending time outside/in the yard currently, and if you're home most days to use it.

My DD would sleep outside if we let her, and she's home 5 days a week, so it was a no brainer for us!

Re: Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

We spend alot of time at home and in our yard. We got one when our youngest was 3. They use it from March/Apr-Oct/Nov, whenever we are home. For us, it is worth it.

I guess it depends if you use your yard when you are home and your kids like to play outside.

Re: Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

DS1 is 4 and he LOVES his swingset. He's out there every day when the weather permits. He literally played on that swingset every single month of the year, even Jan and February in the snow (he's swing and go down the slide into the snow.) We got it when he was 2.5 and it has been great!. The truth is that many days we don't get to the park bc it just takes too long when we have many other things to do but with the swingset in the bakyard, he can just go out there to play.

I would get one. We are relocating OOS and just had our swingset taken down by Creative Playthings bc it's coming with us.

Re: Backyard swingset... yay or nay?

we get alot of use out of ours. My boys are 6 and 3. They have picnics in the "tree house" they play games up there, and the swings of course....

THey use it anytime the weather permits. We also like to entertain alot so there are always kids on it.

Thanks for all the replies. DD and DS have a trampoline out there now and they do like it, but they don't play back there as much as I thought. I was hoping that with the swing set they would have more fun out there. I am still torn. We are looking at one from Sam's as well. Not the skyfort 2, but one that is a bit smaller. DH and I have to really decide soon.

I vote yes. We got ours last year, when DS was 3. He didn't use it much at first. Now, DS is 4 and DD who is 1 love it. It gives them something to "do" in the backyard and a form of entertainment when we have playdates.

Yay. My DD is 7 and we've had ours since she was 14 months old. She plays on it still, as does my older son. Best $299 I've spent! (Walmart Backyard Adventures set)
