Playground Vent
My DD is 2.5yo. We just got home from the playground, and as soon as she got there she saw a little girl around her age (3yo) she wanted to play with. The little girl had no interest in playing with my DD. I just feel so bad for DD because she always tries to play with other LOs and they never want to play with her. I try to distract her or move her to another area of the playground, but she follows them around trying to get them to play. The little girl started to say "I don't like that girl" about my DD, and it just broke my heart. The mother was very nice, and told her DD not to say that, but UGH, I feel so bad for my little munchkin!
Has anyone else experienced this? Does it get better as they get older?

Re: Playground Vent
Awe... that totally stinks. I hate when my kids are rejected. At least the mom was nice and actually there. I've seen it where the kids are mean and the parents aren't even supervising the children. My DS is 4 and always sweet and always wants to make new friends. He loves talking to all kids. Waves when he rides on his bike, follows them on the playground and plays with everyone in his class. He hardly ever rejects a kid and is always eager to make friends. I also teach him to be nice to everyone so makes it tough when kids aren't nice back. Kids will be kids in the end though. Your DD is still young so hopefully won't effect her. As she gets older just teach her that she doesn't have to be friends with everyone and to ignore the "not so nice" kids. Either that or distract her with a bribe... LOL (for good behavior of course). My niece is a year older than DS and sometimes she's so nice to him when she has no one else to play with and other times she's bossy and mean. Breaks my heart.

Re: Playground Vent
Maybe she is shy.
My older DD was like that. She wouldn't interact with other children when she was approached. Even at 6.5 she still doesn't if I am around. My little one is like your DD. I will push her to talk to kids and sometimes they act like that. She will come back and tell me she doesn't want to play and I just say its ok and redirect her.
I don't know that it gets easier, but it is easier for them to comprehend feelings.

Re: Playground Vent
I feel like I wrote your post. This happens every.single.time we go to the park. My dd just wants to play with her "friends" and the other kids ignore her or are mean to her. I don't get it. I breaks my heart every time and now I hate taking her to the playground. I don't want her to start feeling rejection like this all the time. She is going to start preschool so hopefully she can make some real friends.

My DD is just like yours. She will just walk up to any kid and start playing. Most of the time she chooses kids a little older, so they are more receptive ( 3, 4, 5). I find that some of the other 2 year olds are shy or just like to play alone. The ones that do respond to her are the ones that can keep up with her ( I guess she seems older b/c people are always surprised she is only 2.5).

My 2 year old doesn't understand why the twelve year old boys riding their bikes passed our house or at the school playground don't play with her when she calls to them! To her kids are kids and she wants to play with everyone she sees. I think it will get harder as she gets older and understands more if she is rejected. I think it's going to happen to everyone at times though.
Maybe you can make playdates with other kids you know to meet up at the park so she has someone to play with.

I was going to say this. Whenever we take DD to the park, she doesn't want to play with other kids. She gets freaked out by them and runs away. She loves her friends at school but she isn't good with kids she never met before. It takes her a long time to warm up. It could be the other children when you go are shy as well.

the 3 year old probably didn't have the language skills to say something like "I don't feel like playing with anyone at the moment, it's not a reflection on you but I really feel like exploring on my own- thank you"....it's not personal to your little one
My son sometimes wants to be on his own and other times gets rejected...it's life.

DS was this way. He didn't want to play with anyone else - but, he never said he didn't like them or anything - he just kind of ignored them.
Now that he's 4, he's coming out of his shell a bit and will welcome playing with others at the playground.
I do find though that kids continue to be mean - the older ones seem to be moreso.
Sorry this happened to your DD!

I see my future. My dd may only be turning 1 but she already gets upset when kids won't play with her. She loves older kids who talk to her and will share. She tends to gravitate to older kids as well.

Re: Playground Vent
I feel your pain, my DD always wants to play with the other kids and they run away from her. My DD is very affectionate, she tried to hug them or hold their hands. I'm glad I am not the only one who feels like this.

Re: Playground Vent
When we still lived in Manhattan, 2.5 yo DS used to run with the older kids and think he was playing with them. Sometimes he would sit with other kids playing. It was funny, cute and sad at the same time. He was often rejected and it broke my heart.
He just turned 5 and now everyone wants to play with him on the playground.
Don't feel bad. Your DD will have plenty of playground friends soon enough.

Ugh. That is terrible! Unfortunately, you might need to start the life lessons and teaching that some kids are mean.

Re: Playground Vent
Thanks all for all the different perspectives. I do believe the girl today was shy, but I think this particular instance just hit a nerve since the girl kept saying she didn't like my daughter. I would say 90% of the time, my daughter is rejected when she tries to play with other kids at open gym or the playground. Often she tries to play with kids who are just too old for her, which is why I was so happy that she was attempting to make friends with an age appropriate girl. Alas, that did not work out so well!
Sigh. Luckily she is still young so I think these instances phase me more than her. She doesn't yet understand that everyone doesn't want to be her friend and play with her. Not looking forward to the day she does understand that!

I was going to say the same thing about my DD. She's 2 and acts anti-social with children and people she doesn't know. She's the complete opposite if she feels comfortable but she's so shy, she acts mean. So embarrassing!
