Speech services for a 4 year old?

Does anyone gave experience with speech services for a 4 year old.

Is it offered through the school district usually or is it in home and covered through insurance?

I'm guessing it depends on the services. I called my district today and they said I have to register him within the district and then request testing. I'm wondering what happens from there.

They will meet with you. Then DC will be evaluated. And district will determine if DC qualifies. If so, usually they go to your house for sessions. Runs during the school year. If your insurance covers it and the district doesn't approve you can go thru insurance.

Thank you that's the information I was looking for. Is there a place where I can find info on the guidelines in which they would approve services

She has to have A 33% delay. If she doesn't then she wont quality unless she has another service like P/T or O/T etc

I'm not sure if you mean delay like he is not talking. He is talking but his pronunciation is weak with certain sounds. Does that usually not qualify? I am concerned about it and would rather get him started with speech services before he starts kindergarten

For sound production they will do an articulation test. They will also do a full expressive and receptive language test. Districts can be funny they usually want a extremely low score. However is costs nothing to get evaluated and the worst they will say is he does;y qualify. If you have a concern have him evaluated and let the district decide.

once you register him they will set up a meeting to explain the process at which time you will pick an agency. They agency will contact you to set up evaluations. they will submit reports to your district who will then have another meeting with you to determine if he qualifies for services. Usually takes about 2 months start to finish.

I thought at 4 you have to bring them and it's not in your home anymore? I had to drive my DD to sessions at 4.

DS gets speech for articulation. He is advanced in his language, but is found to be only 50% intelligible. So a stranger can understand him 50% of the time when he is speaking sentences. In his one word speech he is easier to understand.

But he still gets services because he is hard to understand. He has a lot to say, but can't say it correctly.

Articulation is tricky because it needs to be pretty bad if that is the ONLY issue. I couldn't get services for him when he was 2 because articulation isn't considered an issue at that age. He was approved when he turned 3. And he was approved again for next year when he is 4.

They check to see how well they understand language. As well as how much language they have for their age. Articulation is just a piece of that. It won't hurt to get evaluated. At least you can see where your DC stands. And if you don't get approved thru the district, check your insurance.

Some of the districts and agencies try to do this but you can have speech service at home, at preschool or at the agency. Special ed (seit) usually has to be at the preschool.
