This pretty much sums it up perfectly.
I wish I had actually looked up the lyrics prior to purchasing this song on iTunes. I bought it because they played it at my kid's camp...which makes me nauseous thinking about it!!!

I mean I think the article is bit extreme and a bit of a stretch. I highly doubt the song is about rape! Half the songs out there nowadays have similar content.

Ever since this original discussion in the Miley post, I have listened to the song a million times and tried to get this is a "rape" song and I still don't, even after hearing the other side.

I think its about a girl playing hard to get, who is a good girl with a bad girl side. I think its about how she plays the role of a good girl, but is the opposite with him.

ITA

I really do. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Many women DO want it but don't act on their desires. I think it's as simple as that. Doesn't mean that she will be FORCED.

Wow, that's a reach. I thought it was about being tipsy at the club and not bringing the girl home even though she seems to 'want it' because she's drunk. Hence why he "hates these blurred lines".

I thought it was about pot! How she puts on the good girl facade but deep down, smokes weed, parties and will play hard to get but will put out.

I don't think it's an over the top article at all. The song, like many others, undermines a woman's (or girl's) agency in saying "no." It's that classic "I know you really want it - no matter what you say or do" song. The explicit lyrics in the rap portion are disgusting - "I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two."

It's got a great melody and is really catchy. . . but I don't like the lyrics.

Personally, I don't think it's too much of a stretch either. I know there has been some debate on here regarding the lyrics so for those that felt it was "rapey", you're not alone!
They were BLARING this song at my kid's camp over the summer. I'm talking ages 4-10 years old and I wish I had actually listened to the lyrics. Then again, they also would dance like crazy to the Wobble. And those lyrics...well...google 'em.

Let me qualify this by saying that I didn't read the article. While I don't think that "Blurred Lines" is a "rape song" per se, I don't agree with the message of the song. IMHO, there are never "blurred lines," because no means no.

The blurred lines are not about a girl saying yes or no. I dont know why everyone thinks the blurred line is a girl saying no. Thats not it. The blured line is a good girl with a bad girl side who doesnt act on it. Its an arrogant guy going i know im good looking and i know you want me. It has absolutely nothing to do with a guy raping a woman. Or taking her power away.
I say this all the time all commen sense has flown out the window in this world. Everyone has lost their sense of fun and enetertainment. Theres nothing wrong with a woman whose sexual. Shes still a good girl even those shes sexual.
It just makes me want to scream when i hear this im sorry im not trying to attack anyone. I just seriously get angry about this.
Rape is not a joke. It is not a word to be tossed around. And it just shows how overly sensitive this world has come that people cant just enjoy a song and go yea i remember that hot guy i would have loved to do xyz with but i didnt cause im not that kinda girl. Or i did cause i felt like it. Blurred lines....

Eta: i wouldnt waste 1 second of my life on that article.

This is EXACTLY what I think too. Its not about a blurred line, where she doesn't really want it, but he thinks she does. The blurred line is her own, good girl with a naughty side.

And to add, im sorry but the people who take that song to any type of rape level, says a lot more to me about your character and the dark thoughts you have. Thats just a really deep level to take this. A place it should and is clearly not meant to go.

Dude, it's an article. With one of several interpretations of song lyrics. To many people, the lyrics imply rape. No need to chastise anyone for their interpretation. To do so says a lot about your character.

I don't know much about the song, but with a line like this? Even if it is not about rape, that is a pretty sick and degrading line. If a woman doesn't have a problem with a line like that it says alot about her character and her dark thoughts. Eeek! To each their own!!

Um, that's a bit extreme, no? Song lyrics are up to interpretation and while we are free to disagree, it is within reason for me and others to claim that the male voice of the song (song written by men and performed by a male vocalist and male rapper) is speaking for a woman. If the singer were a woman saying to a man - "I know you want it," - the song would be different. Not necessarily better or worse, but different. The line "I know you want it" is, to me, creepy and indicative of what sociologists refer to as "rape language." Did I say that the song documents rape? No. I did write that I didn't think the article was over the top. I'm not in favor of universities banning the song (as they have done in Leeds and Edinburgh) because there is a slippery slope here. But I'm free to not like the song (or the video) because I find it offensive and objectifying. If you think that says something about me, fine - but I don't really see how that says I'm somehow more dark in nature than the average person.

I think many many songs appropriate the voice and agency of women. I think Britney's "Work *****" song is problematic because it attempts to take a degrading word and make it an anthem. I don't think young girls and boys can identify irony and will therefore think that it's ok to use that word when referring to a girl or woman. And to me, that's not ok. If my daughters referred to anyone as a ***** there would be hell to pay for in my home and it gets more and more difficult for me to drive this message home when there are loads of songs that make this kind of language ok.

Again, people are free to disagree about Blurred Lines or any song. Songs (with the exception of say, Happy Birthday) are to be interpreted in multiple ways.

Have you listened to many many rap songs out there. They all have things like this. This line was done by TI. I am guessing he probably wrote that section of the song.

oh come on...he doesn't mean he's LITERALLY going to tear her to shreds...it's talking about rough sex. Some people like rough sex sometimes...there's nothing sick or degrading about it. Not everyone wants to listen to kenny G and cuddle surrounded by teddy bears and candles. This thread is getting a little ridiculous.

Re: For those who think Blurred Lines is about rape

also, I really equate this to the little boy who cried wolf. Rape is a very serious issue and it should absolutely be addressed but if you take EVERY SINGLE THING in this world and cry "RAPE CULTURE!" people will no longer listen or take you or the message seriously.

There is a difference between kinkiness, exploring sexual desires, having a naughty side and rape...a very big difference. I think for the most part people see this song for what it is...a song about people out drinking, having a good time, feeling in the moment and considering acting out on sexual desires.
