When did you take away bottles?

DD is 16 months. I took away her pacifier successfully this week. Today I tried putting her milk in a cup in place of her afternoon bottle. She wanted NOTHING to do with it. I don't want her to stop getting her milk. I feel like she's still too young. Someone suggested a little ovaltine in there at first. I figure I'll keep trying but I'm not sure I should go cold turkey on the bottles.

ETA: Don't they need the fats in the milk for brain development? I'm worried about her not drinking any at all if I go cold turkey. She will have a yogurt and a slice of cheese, but I doubt that's enough so I guess that's my main concern.

When my DD was 17 months, cold turkey. She revolted, refused milk in a sippy for a while but eventually came around. I wasn't concerned though since at that point milk is just a small part of her overall nutrition.

ETA - I personally don't feel like it should be gradual. I think it's easier to just get rid of them all at once as opposed to arbitrarily choosing when a bottle is ok and when it's not. Just my opinion though.

DD is 14 months and down to one bottle at bedtime. I plan to get rid of that one at 15 months.

We did also at 16 months. I have twins & one had a meltdown. They not get a bottle only before bed & they are 21 months.

ds#1- 12 months cold turkey. Took a week before he gave in and starting drinking more milk from it.

ds#2- 11 months cold turkey and not one issue. But he had been using a sippy cup for months prior.

When did you take away bottles?

15 months cold turkey. He was using a cup during the dqy at daycare but revolted at home. I waited longer with DS 1 and its harder the longer you wait.

I am going to stop cold turkey in 3 months. I am waiting because we are going on a long flight in October and I want her to have the bottle for her ears. My ped agrees with this decision. She is 16 mos now.

DS is 2 years 2 months and still gets a bottle at night before bed. I know I need to break the habit, I'm just petrified to do it.

For those of you who took the bottle away at 12 months cold turkey, DS will be one next week and I am taking the bottles away completely. Even night bottles. I feel he is 100% ready. But how did you do it? Do you just replace the bottles with sippy's and give it to them at their bottle times? It did you just give them some milk in their sippy's as more of a side beverage with breakfast, lunch an dinner? My twins just get milk with breakfast and lunch. Water with dinner, sometimes milk, and water the rest of the day. Jut wondering I should keep the baby on four sippy's of milk a day like his bottles. TIA!

I did it gradually and took away her last morning bottle at 19 months.

12 months and I did it cold turkey. As soon as he switched to regular milk, DS got cups with straws.

He was not happy for about 4 days and then he got over it.

The ped recommended DS only have up to 14 oz of whole milk a day at 12 months old so he got 2 cups of milk a day -- about 6 oz each (he also got milk through making oatmeal, cheese, etc...)

The rest of the time he drank water.

DD just turned 1 and we are gradually taking them away. Starting next week she will have only one bottle at DC. I say in a few weeks I will take away her am bottle.

DD - at 12 mos we replaced all but her nighttime bottle with sippy cups. By 13 mos she was completely off bottles. No problem whatsoever.

DS - he is 16 mos and still on bottles. He will drink water/juice out of a sippy but has given us a hard time about the milk. I plan to stop bottles cold turkey at 18 mos. We'll see how that goes over...

12 months. Stopped cold turkey. Her milk intake dropped for a week or two, but then she caught on. Your DC will be fine with little to no milk for a few days. Just increase other dairy intake, like yogurt and cheese.

As for drinking enough milk, I found that both boys were drinking too much milk with bottles - since they were using it for comfort. Now that they are drinking out of sippies, they are drinking a more reasonable amount.

We did it gradually starting at about 15 months (I think?). First we took away one afternoon bottle, then the next, the nighttime, then morning was last to go. It helped that she never had a bottle to fall asleep, otherwise I suspect that one may have taken longer.

IMO I think its cruel to take away bottles cold turkey. At 12months my DD was still very much a baby, and the bottle was a source of food and comfort to her. I didn't find it necessary to rattle her world by making them completely disappear one day. When she was ready, she was ready. By 19 months they were gone.
