It depends...if you are in the heart of Astoria, it's going to be rough.
My friend lives on kinda the outskirts though. Anytime I've visited her, I've usually been able to get a spot within two blocks.

It was, um. . .challenging 
Are you moving there?
When DH & I were dating we lived there
( separately) and he had a car & drove to work everyday. In year & half he only got 1 ticket ( ell, 2 but same incident)
It depends where you are, but after a while you learn where the better streets to park are. You have to be willing to walk though!
SH learned that my block didn't have alternate side regulations, so he would frequently walk the t avenues & 7 blocks home when he had a good spot.
It's harder if you don't drive your car everyday, b/c on most streets you have to move for alternate side.
When we went on vacation, he drove his car to his parents house & took the train back home the night before we left.

Depends on where in Astoria. I live in Astoria and my street has very easy parking. Where you headed? Maybe I can give you an insider's tip on where to park?

Ditto. By the train, it's really bad. But there are areas that are fine!

How bad is parking in Astoria?
My cousin lives not too far from Steinway Street and for the most part I've been lucky with parking but I can see how annoying it can be. I met her at her apartment one night before driving into the city, we took her car so I parked and got a spot right on her street. But when we walked to her car it was parked like two blocks away and around the corner. If I had to do that every single day I would not be a happy camper.

what time of day and where?
there are a ton of muni-lots...
as far as living there, alternate side parking is THE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have never been late to work in 7 years and yesterday morning i spent 45 min trying to find a legal spot for the day. I parked outside my bfs house and threw my keys thru the front door and it took him another hour to find a legal spot and he was late to work.
good luck!! i think after 9 you should be ok since most people are up and out!
