after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
I'm delivering at Stonybrook Not a C-Section. 3 years ago when I delievered there I just had to pay the co payment this time I have a feeling the bill is going to be more due my insurance. Just wondering what other moms bills were like after you gave birth. Out of pocket

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
Well, when I had Emerson 4 yrs ago (C-section) we had better insurance and EVERYTHING was covered while I pregnant and for delivery too. I paid a $15 co-pay on my first OB visit then nothing the rest of my pregnancy until delivery, we had a $500 hospital co-pay. So OOP I spent only $515. It was awesome.
Now we have a high deductible plan. I have to meet $3500 in deductibles every year and then co-insurance kicks in until I hit $7500 total. So basically, to have this baby...............it's going to cost me $7500 OOP.

after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
I had a $300 copay and I had to pay the anesthesiologist around $600 since they were out of network and wouldn't work to accept just what insurance offers (basically it's on the form I signed when getting my epi)... So $900 (well, I'm technically still paying the anesthesiologist).
ETA - I did have some lab copays, an initial copay ($15) and then a $50 l&d copay after I fell as well... I would say $200 in incidentals.

I know!! I wish he was born the same year I got pregnant. Unfortunately, we had to pay out twice since we crossed over into the new year but luckily it was a little less last year because our amounts were lower and we didn't deliver him in 2012. I think I laid out about $3K last year. Expensive baby.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
I think our hospital copay per our insurance is $500 That is what we paid I believe.
We also had to pay out of pocket because I wanted a private room. I think it was like $225 a night maybe? Whatever it was, it was the BEST money I ever spent. That private room was heaven!

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
With DS, it was just the $500 copay, then I switched insurances with a high copy with DD, I paid around 6k out of pocket. Now, my insurance has changed again, and I don't believe my out of pocket will be more than a copay.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
Depends on which DC, my first I had AMAZING insurance, we had a $100 co-pay. The others, I had a crazy deductible and owed probably $2000 after all was said and done for each.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
My first two pregnancies under different insurance, I don't think I paid a thing! Maybe a hospital co-pay? I can't remember!
I had my 3rd by c/s almost a year ago and I ended up owing my OB the difference between what he billed and what the insurance paid him. Same for hospital. I ended up paying close to $5000. Oh, and a $300 anesthesia bill. And I had to pay for the baby's hearing test, that was about $200 or so.
My insurance sucks! Completely and totally sucks. We pay so much for it and we have a $7500 family deductible, and then a 20% coinsurance after that. I think we max out around $13,500. Every year.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
$200 for the hospital. It would have been zero had I notified the insurance company within 48 hours of birth or per-registered. I had notified them but not in the way they required. I appealed; I lost. So be it. My anesthesiologist was out of network but graciously accepted whatever my insurance gave him.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
For the most accurate out-of-pocket maximum for you specifically, call your insurance company and ask! Be sure to add up deductibles, copays, and coinsurances, and ask what your out-of-pocket maximum is for the whole maternity process.
When I delivered at Winthrop almost 2 yrs ago, I was in labor for 2 days and stayed 2 nights (4 nights total) and DD was in the NICU for 7 nights. Out of pocket max for all (docs, anesthesiologist, drugs, hospital, docs, etc) was $3k, but I was a lil below... not much, but a lil.
Also,d epending on your hospital and income, the hospital may have a charity care available for lower income folks. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Re: after giving birth how crazy was your hospital bill?
I work in the insurance field. I would state the following:
* Where you deliver does not make a difference unless its out of network. * Your plan design determines what you pay...for example, you will play a ton more in a high deductile plan than with a copay plan. * Call you insurance company's 1-800 number and they should be able to give you an idea on what you out of pocket will be for the entire pregnancy. Ask questions such as is lab, radilogy included.
Good luck.

DD is 7 months old, and I haven't seen a bill! When I looked at my benefits, it said that everything would be covered in full, but I didn't expect it to be true.

this is basically the same for me. I had DS when i worked full time and carried our benefits. I paid $45 copay for my first prenatal visit and then nothing else until delivery. I think i had a copay for the nursery stay (2 nites); the dr bill for the circumsicion (which was not much) and some sort of balance with the anesthesiologist. If I spent $600 out of pocket I think that was it.
Now we are on a high ded. HSA plan and have to meet a 3000 ded then pay 10% until 6000 out of pocket max.
Our enrollment year is july so Im waiting until like April to start trying for # 2 so I can deliver within the JUly - JUly deductible year. B/c Im only paying that shit once..lol.
