No fever, clear runny nose, slight cough but I kept my child home today. Not sure if it was overkill.

Depends.. is this preschool also daycare and you'd have to miss work if DC didn't go to school? If so, I can see jusitfying sending them. If not, it seems optional enough that they shouldn't go. Runny noses can be the start of something bigger and I'm always worried about putting other kids at risk and wont' if I can avoid it.

I guess it's different cause my db goes to daycare, but my daycare has a policy that if child has had a fever in the last 24 or vomiting or diarrhea stay home. Everything else, you can bring in. That's the reality of daycare, though. You cannot keep your kid home for every little cold...you'd have to take off way too much work.

Re: Poll - Would you send your child to preschool with a runny nose?

The first day I took dd to daycare(trial run) most of the kids in her class had a cough, chest congestion, and or runny nose. I didn't have a problem with it because I'm pro her being exposed to build up a better immune system. She's been there a month and just started getting congested. Most likely from her building up saliva. Nothing a snot sucker and vicks machine can't help with. From my understanding her daycare doesn't allow sick kids at school but what I listed above is not what they consider sick.

But to answer your question. I would send my dd.

I have kept my kids home from school when the runny nose was seriously nonstop like a faucet, kwim?

But for a garden-variety not-too-terrible runny nose, yes I do send them. Especially since runny noses can take a LONG time to go away.

You would not believe the illnesses people send their kids to school with. I really wouldn't feel guilty about sending them with just a cold! I know a parent who has knowingly sent her kid to school with active pinkeye, and basically went to work KNOWING she would get the call at some point and have to go get the kid.... but then she could write it off as just "leaving early" and not have to use one of her days off. A variant on this is when they give the kid Motrin to buy themselves at least half a day or so, and then they get the call and can just leave early when the Motrin wears off and the fever spikes back up. This stuff happens all the time.

I feel like it's just part of daycare that they have a chronic runny nose or cough.

Yes, DS's preschool teacher said as long as they are not throwing up, a fever or have green boogies, we can bring them in.

Re: Poll - Would you send your child to preschool with a runny nose?

Yes. If there were no kids with runny noses at my preschool, we'd have half of the school out on a daily basis! I hate when the parents send them with the green boogers, but as long as they don't have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, we can't make the parents pick them up or keep them home. Even if they are coughing up a lung and miserable. I wouldn't send my child like that obviously, but with a clear runny nose, yes.

Yep..

Dont care what color either white, green, yellow, she's going to school. (ETA: Doc says color isn't a garauntee of infection and not something to base your reaction off of)

Fever, listlessness (tired) then no. She's never vomited (knock on wood) or had the runs (again god please no thank you)

I have to say she has built up an AWESOME immune system. One I've very proud of. Hand, foot and mouth was going around two weeks ago and nothing, she's had pink eye cases in her class, nothing, there was another contagious thing too but AJ didn't even slow down. She's been sick maybe once this year. She got a cold from my aunt (who is a subsitute teacher and got sick from a kid who coughed, sneezed on her) her cold lasted only a few days and was easily maintained.

I'm VERY Happy to know when she goes to regular kindergarten she should hold up fairly well while others may fall off as never been exposed.

Allergies are big thing here, so bad that they alone will knock you on your back but she's got hers under control with treatment and she's solid as a rock my kiddo.. SOOOO Grateful after those first nearly 2yrs of constant ear infections, fevers and drama... whew!

Hell yeah. DS had a runny nose most of last March-May (turned out it was allergies, at least in April & May). I wouldn't have been able to work at all, and he wouldn't have learned a thing.

A runny nose isn't a big deal. If DC seems well otherwise, good mood, no fever, etc.I have no problem with this.

I agree...if I kept DD home everytime she had a runny nose, she would be home all of the time. I would and have kept her home for vomiting, fever, diarrhea until she is symptom free for 24 hours.
