Is this "normal" re: fundraisers

DS just started nursery school 2 sessions a week at a private Catholic school.

It seems like every week there is a fundraiser.

Or an email about a fundraiser that is coming up.

At 3, they sent him home with a big box of candy bars to sell (I brought them to work and set them in our shared lobby and am doing well so far).

I don't mind contributing to an extent, but it's a lot overall.

I get that they need this money to sustain themselves, but am I awful if I don't contribute to everything?

Plus, I can't take off work to attend a lot of these "events".

Is it like this in elementary (outside of private schools).

Discuss!

Is this

My ds' nursery has a "no fundraisers" policy. It is private/not religious.

It's insane the amount of fundraising.

My biggest beef so far was this:

They doled out these giant coupon books with a flyer. Dh took it after picking up our pre-k'er and used a coupon for Wendy's or something.

Come to find out the books are 25 each and we are asked to sell them.

Out 25 bucks.

Then - overpriced wrapping paper

Chocolate
Knick knacks

Book fair was today and a donation and buying books was encouraged. I did both.

It's already mid oct and its out of hand.

I'm all for supporting the PTA and stuff but don't I pay school taxes?? I can't afford all this other stuff too.

It's pressure to keep up with all this stuff.

Yes, private Catholic schools have a lot of fundraisers that I believe you must particpate in. We always had to growing up.

Yep ds is in Pre k. Last year I contributed to most of them. This year, we can't. We have a lot of other things going on, I find it very annoying

Our PTA is doing a fundraiser of selling holiday greenery. Its for backyard play area improvements.

I think know WHAT the money is going for (its end goal) makes it easier for me to be ok with it. if that makes sense.

I just remember from going to years of CCD classes and then catholic school there were sales all.the.time.

and you HAD to sell a minimum of like $40 back then or make a donation in that amount if you werent going to fundraise.

i swear..one year i think my mom had just bought $38 worth of crap out of the booklet and they sent a note home that she was $2.00 short, but they would still accept it.Chat Icon

I cant imagine what its like now.

My kids are in a private Catholic School and have been since their pre-K days. Luckily, the school has done away with the take home fundraisers! They did at one point do Yankee Candle, wrapping paper, cookie dough, etc. Now, the schools (there is a HS too in the parish) do one or two big events, usually a dinner and auction (with donated goods) and a golf outing at the country club. We don't always go.

Nothing was every required. Ever. You only participated if you wanted to. There was never any pressure. The school does not add money into tuition or anything and you are not required any kind of donation or service. The only difference in cost is those who are not part of the parish do pay more in tuition.

Re: Is this "normal" re: fundraisers

we have been bombarded since DS started K but so far the fundraisers were for things I really wanted to order anyway. I did not ask around to sell giftwrap but I ordered for myself and thought that was enough. I needed several things and I know that the quality is good.

The coupon book is amazing and I need to sell 1 more to get another one free. Anyone interested? FM me? $25 and it is amazing. I have already used Denny's Childrenswear and Macy's from my sample book and within the next 2 weeks I will use Michael's and one for a kids' play place.

DS got a fundraiser sent home this week too. He is TWO! He literally goes two days a week for 90 minutes and they sent home the packet with a 100% participation policy. Crazy

What did they write as the policy? Did they inform you when you enrolled? If not you do not have to participate.

Yeah I was going to say- what will they do if you don't partcipate? Kick your child out of the school?
You PAY for them to go there.... I would tell them to go scratch.

I got some fundraising bullshyt from DD"s daycare- that I pay through the nose for her to go to. That shit went right in the garbage. My hefty weekly tution is my contribution to that school.
Period.

This, exactly! We get so many fliers, asking for money or to buy stuff or to attend galas... I pay a huge amount of money for the kid to go to school... don't ask me to contribute more!!!
