OMG! This is the most ridiculous article I have ever read. I am a psychologist who specializes in behavior therapy and a tenured professor of psychology. Just this week, I presented two lectures on Watson and his experiments! The author of this inane article is spewing complete garbage. Her characterization of Watson and other behaviorists is not based in any science whatsoever!!!!!
Whatever your professional paradigm...I think it's important to let the readers know that Watson's son committed suicide. His behaviorist theories were precursors to the CIO methods, which involve extinction. Sorry...but we're raising humans not herding cattle.
Does this mean that every person who committed suicide blamed their parents?.
No it means they all had parents that made them cio as babies

Re: Spin Off: Dangers of CIO
Please. We did CIO with both kids and they are fine.
Ridiculous. Just plain ridiculous.
If you don't do CIO, that's fine. Why harass others because they do.

From one psychologist to another: Thank you for saying what I wanted to!
Glad I have the word of two PROFESSIONALS to back up my feelings that Grill, you should take a hike. Guilting mothers and generally being a condescending jerk might be fun for you but we are sick of it here, go away.
You can add a third to the list. This article is misleading, unscholarly, vague and inflammatory. What utter nonsense.

You really are not helping your cause at all with these statements. You just don't seem to understand how to present your POV in a manner that is not condescending and absolute. If you truly want to make a change in people's parenting practices, you need to change your delivery. Otherwise, go ahead and keep posting about how your chosen methods of parenting are better than everyone else's...but please stop doing it under the guise of trying to be helpful or informative.
FWIW, I respect your choice not do use CIO, and to do whatever else works for YOUR family. Please just stop being so holier-than-thou about it, and learn to respect others.

I did cio with my ds. My sil did not. Both kids are the same age just 2 mos apart.
My ds can put himself to sleep anywhere, is well behaved, mostly calm, extremely independent and is on par with all developmental milestones.
Sil's ds is a pusher, has sharing issues, clings to her like white on rice, and at 3yrs old barely speaks in sentences.
It has nothing to do w cio. It has to do w parenting and how you raise and nurture your children. So go sell your crazy somewhere else. We're all full here.

My SIL & BIL didn't to do CIO. My nephew is almost 6 and still sleeps in their bed where he has always slept because they didn't want to deal with his crying. They also made him scared of every little thing so they wouldn't have to yell at him but that's a different story. He is anxious, shy, clingy, has speech issues, etc. I am not saying that he's like that because they didn't CIO but like the PP said, it's about how you raise and nurture your children. And everyone has a different method.

Wow! Talk about spurious conclusions. First of all, Watson was not a proponent of CIO. Watson applied the Pavlovian model of conditioning to humans. His particular interest was in determining whether the Pavlovian model could explain the acquisition of complex emotional reactions. He never spoke about sleep training. He never reported in the literature that he performed CIO procedures with his children.
If Watson's son committed suicide, it was likely due to unknown factors. Or perhaps, his suicide was the result of growing up motherless. Watson's wife, Rosalie Rayner died from dysentery at the age of 35. Watson was very affected by her death. Because of his affair with Rosalie, he was alienated from the field. I don't mean to be pompous here, but I have a particular interest in the history of psychology. I have a lot of criticisms against Watson, but espousing complete mistruths is deceptive.

Re: Spin Off: Dangers of CIO
This whole article is INSANE! I did CIO, however I totally understand and respect why people would choose not to. All this article does is try to scare people by misrepresenting ideas as facts.
But this is probably the funniest thing I have read in a LONG time...
"We know now that leaving babies to cry is a good way to make a less intelligent, less healthy but more anxious, uncooperative and alienated person who can pass the same or worse traits on to the next generation."

Re: Spin Off: Dangers of CIO
what a load of crap-honestly, i've been on here a long time and hardly respond to ridiculouness of this degree. you take the cake posting something like this on a parenting website. do what works for you and YOUR family don't go insinuating that those parents who have done CIO will have kids who could potentially commit suicide or have major problems.... congratulations on not doing CIO and not "damaging" your child. how awesome for you. oh thank goodness you posted this gem...although for me it's too late. i did CIO with my kids. it took 2 nights, maybe an hour of crying. they are perfect. and they sleep beautifully.
