Almond milk drinkers (and any other dairy free help)

If you drink almond milk, how would you compare it to regular milk.

I have to try my 4 yr old on a dairy free diet to see if it helps with his stomach issues...he is a HUGE dairy eater, including drinking his strawberry flavored milk every morning (I only put a small amount in).

Also, any suggestions on other dairy free items that taste like the "original". Thanks!

Not the same but I recently started drinking Soy Milk (vanilla & chocolate). It's delish! Haven't tried it with milk yet, though.

In addition to dairy, DS has a peanut allergy so we avoid tree nuts just in case. Our pediatrician said that of the dairy alternatives, soy tastes the closest to cow's milk.

I started drinking almond milk because I have gestational diabetes and need to keep carbs at bay.

I didn't think I'd like it. But I LOVE it!

It's not as filling as milk, nor is it as creamy. I wouldn't even try and compare it TO milk. It just doesn't have the consistency of milk. It borders on watery.

I don't know how a child would react to it. I think that it's more of an acquired, or adult, taste - if that makes sense...?

I drink almond milk. I love it. I don't usually mix it with anything, but sometimes will add protein powder to it or chocolate syrup.

I went from skim milk to almond milk, so I did not mind.

I have tried soy milk and just get not get over that taste.

eta: I drink unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Almond milk is ok - I do think it has a strong almond taste though. I actually preferred coconut milk when I was avoiding dairy.

Ditto. I tried almond and found it to have a strong aftertaste. I like coconut (original in cereal and vanilla in coffee) or soy

IMO soy milk is the closest in taste. Even got DH to drink and he thought he would hate it

My son used to drink soy milk, but we switched to Almond Milk and we alternate with Coconut Milk. My son LOVES the coconut milk!

My son drinks Almond Milk for the same reasons. At first we tried Coconut Milk and he hated it, even when I put in a little strawberry or chocolate syrup.
The Almond Milk he LOVES! Drinks right up, and I do still switch off between chocolate syrup or strawberry.

My girls used to drink soy but we wanted to limit their soy intake so we switched over to almond. They make a dark chocolate almond milk that my girls can't get enough of! Even my nephews and nieces who are cow milk drinkers prefer this. My oldest DD still prefers the taste of plain soy milk to plain almond milk however.

I buy either the unsweetend vanilla and my kids love it. Actually, everyone but the baby is on almond milk. Brand makes a big difference too. Silk is kinda thin and not my first choice. Almond Breeze makes a much better milk and it is thicker. With strawberry syrup it is really yummy.

I hate milk- even before I was vegan- I would not drink milk

I LOVE unsweetened vanillia almond milk

I get the organic one at whole foods for my shakes- it's great

Almond milk tastes nothing like regular milk but my kids like it better. We buy the vanilla Blue Almond brand and it tastes like a vanilla milkshake. I have noticed they don't like it with chocolate syrup though which is fine with me. They love it in cereal as well.

We had DS dairy free for a while and we did the almond milk (Almond Breeze unsweetened.). He loved it. I liked it sometimes too. I was actually afraid that when we switched him back he wouldnt like regular milk any more.

Re: Almond milk drinkers (and any other dairy free help)

I had to take my daughter to a food allergist and he said cowsmilk is bad for anyone and really bad for children...mm-that is probly another topic.
My daughter is allergic to dairy and he also said to avoid soy.. Coconut milk is the best he suggested followed by Almond milk
After switching I noticed a huge imporvement in my daughter's temperment.
Coconut tends to have a lot of sugar though so it is best to brush right after

Chores milk in coffee.and baking too. But almond milk for cereal and drinking. Thinner but sweeter and healthier imo.

Ds drinks the unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Recently he refused it or would only have a cup or two a week.. He's allergic to dairy so I was afraid he wasn't getting enough calcium since he's not eating cheese or anything else. His dr suggested the chocolate almond milk. Ds loved it and asked for 3 or more cups a day I have to turn him down after awhile. I do buy both cartons now and mix so there is less chocolate and sugar. I get the unsweetened vanilla fill up his cup almost all the way then add a splash of the chocolate. He can't tell the difference.
