age to start rice or oatmeal?
What is the determining factor for you to start cereal? DD is (BF) eating just about every 2 hours @ night. During the day she can go 4hrs between feedings. DH thinks that starting cereal would help her stay fuller at night and maybe sleep thru the night. DD is 15 weeks and at night wont take a bottle from DH only wants mama and I know i am not producing enough to keep her full. Im losing my mind and i have to start work on monday. I dont know how i will survive.
Her Pediatrician didnt mention anything about cereal yet. I will ask at her next well visit but thats in 3 weeks
Any advice?

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
I think I remember from my twins that my ped suggested starting it around 4 months. But not really as a substitute for any meals just to get them used to the idea of it. However DD2 is going to be 4 months tomorrow and I dont really see her being ready for it soon so I think it definitely depends on the baby.
Is she strictly on BM or do you also try formula when you try a bottle with her?

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
Wer just started rice cereal 2 weeks ago. DD is 5 months. My pediatrician said that its good to start when they can sit up with assistance (between 4 -6 months). She also said that she should at least be eating cereal before her 6 month appt.
HTH!

She prefers the breast, and takes BM and formula from the bottle. Just at night she refuses the bottle. If I make 4 oz which she drinks during the day she will only drink 2oz at night but every 2 hrs. I dont know how to change that. its killing us cause she cries until she gets to nurse. I know I only pump 2oz currently so thats what she will take its like she knows that on the bottle too.

Do you think she's actually hungry at night when she wakes? I ask that because you say she cries until she can nurse but maybe she only wants to do it for soothing reasons and not so much to eat?

If I put binky in she will spit it out and usually that is soothing to her. I guess that is a good thought. She does eat and its usually a short nurse before she falls asleep again. How do i stop that if it is just soothing?

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
Maybe try patting her back or rubbing her stomach instead of picking her up. The long "Ssshhhhhhhhhh"'s are usually a good way for me to soothe my DD. Maybe a sound machine in her room would help her get herself back to sleep on her own if she wakes up?

age to start rice or oatmeal?
We started at 4.5 months. Our ped suggested to get him to the texture, not as a supplement fpr breast milk. We started with just a couple of spoonfuls a day and gradually went from there. He loved it and we had moved on to fruits and veggies by 6 months.

If you start too early with oatmeal or rice you run the risk of making her chances of developig an allergy higher. My pediatrician is big on holding off on it as long as possible to prevent allergies and to ensure their digestive track is mature enough to handle it.

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
Babies, especially that young, are designed to wake frequently at night to nurse. Breastmilk takes about 90 minutes to digest. Frequent waking is age-appropriate...except for the RARE few who actually sleep long stretches from the get go. Waking protects them from SIDS, encourages bonding, increases your supply...etc. Rice and other grains should not be started before 9-10 months, which is the time that the digestive enzymes necessary to metabolize grains are manufactured by the pancreas. It is a very common and very faulty suggestion to offer complex carbs as a first meal. If parents believe it helps their child sleep better, it's because they are in a food coma of sorts....the crash that comes after the carb high. I know that this is a trying time....I've done it twice and am still doing it every 2 hours with my 7 month old. If you're certain that your DC isn't hungry, and you're desperate for longer stretches of sleep, maybe DH can help soothe baby back to sleep with walking, rocking, singing, pacifier.. etc. This can help baby learn that the mommy paci isn't the only way to fall back asleep. You're in the trenches now....hang in there, she'll grow out of this phase sooner or later.

If she's only nursing a few minutes I would guess she's not very hungry and just wants to comfort nurse back to sleep. DD is 5 months and wakes about every 3 hours at night although she actually used to go much longer. We haven't started cereal yet since the AAP recommendation is to wait until 6 months. I would hold off on cereal since she's still so young. You could try to squeeze in another feeding during the day or try a dream feeding. Hang in there!

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
we had thi same issue with my nearly 10 week old. The pediatrician recommended formula atnight. We use a powder version and he will take anywhere from 4-8 ounces. That will usually have him last 4-8 hours. cant make heads or tails of more formula= more sleep. I do note that when he sleeps better during teh day, he sleeps better at night. Good luck!! Hope she sleeps better soon.

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
Ped started DS on rice at his 4 month check up. We then went on to the other cereals, then fruits and now veggies. DS starts the meats next week. He will be 7 months tomorrow.

Re: age to start rice or oatmeal?
Our Dr. told us to look out for when LO starts producing tons of saliva (like soaking through bibs) as 1 of the signs that he could be ready for oatmeal. He also mentioned if LO is eating close to 40oz of milk/formula per day, that it could be time.
DS is going to be 4 months next Monday and we have our Dr. appointment the next day so we are going to talk about it again at that appt, but as of now our plan is to start it next week.
