when do you say enough big parties....

My twins are going to be 6 this sunday.
We had big parties since they were 3. Last year for their 5th party we did it big.
Last week we had a BIG housewarming party, and got a bouncer for all the kids.
Now my DH are fighting because Matthew asked if all his preschool friends are going to be there. We just invired 5 of the new neighbors for cale, and just doing a family. It is NOT sitting right with DH, so I told him here are all the names and #'s you call. I cant call people now for Sunday.
When do you stop having big parties?? When is enough enough.??

I am never havign big parties. My DS will be one in Dec and it will jsut be grandparents and a few others at our house for cake.

IMO the huge parties are a bit overboard. Maybe once but def not every year. I would rather spend my money on my DS or a vacation.

I stopped doing "big" parties at 3... However, now that they are both in school I always do a party and invite their classmates.

After 1.

Christening
1st birthday, and that was it.

Since preschool, it has been immediate family parties at home with pizza and cake (grandparents and his aunts/uncles/cousins) and then a small class party.

Yep Zoo with just Mom & Dad for her 1st bday, same for 2nd. 3rd we took her to Disney and family came to see her, 4th we went to NY.

No friends, no Chuck E Cheese parties, no backyard blowouts. I'm just not for them. Maybe when she's in elementary I'll 'start' LOL by then other parents will be worn out from them and think my small party 'makes sense' LOL

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We only had big parties for baptisms.

In the future I'm guessing we will do big ones for 1st communion and HS graduation, that is all.

We did a huge first bday party. This year for her 2nd it was just family in our yard. I'll do a big first bday for dd2 as well than after that it will just be small family celebrations. Once they go tO school I will have a party out with their classmates.

We did a big first birthday and baptism and after that, I don't intend on doing it up big again until maybe age 5. In my family 1 and 5 are "milestones" for the little kids.

We had a big 1.5 birthday and now we do a family cookout for her 1/2 birthdays. I just don't like big parties. When they are in school though we will have more kid centered parties. What I mean by that is we'll invite the whole class over to celebrate. I should also add it will be a small private school so I think we can handle the 10 kids in the class lol. I mean the graduating 8th grade class was 4 kids!

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

"Big" as in 150 people?
We did that for Baptisms and 1st Birthdays -

Now we are done.

We do cake on their birthday for the immediate family - and then have a kiddie party for their cousins and friends.

We didn't do a party for Sean's 2nd - we started last year for his 3rd because he asked - but even then, I didn't invite the whole daycare class - just the kids I knew he played with/talked about, and my cousin's / friends kids who are close in age and we see all the time.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

What is your definition of "big"?? Lots of people or lots of $$$?

We had literally 8 kids (all family) at DS's 2nd birthday - still cost us over $200.

DD had a large 1st birthday at our house, but I quickly learned that house parties are just as much, if not more, than parties out due to food, alcohol, etc. She had parties at places for birthdays 2-4, probably 15-18 kids at each.

She started K this year, so not sure what we are doing.

We had a huge babyshower and baptism....for his first birthday we are having 12 children, pizza and cake at a local little gym type of place.

I'm fine with pizza and cake with immediate family and close friends going forward, beyond that it's just not my bag.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We has a party for DS when he turned 1.

It wasn't big - it was a 2 hour party at Gymboree with 40 adults and kids and it was a joint party since my brother's DD turned 1 3 days earlier.

He just turned 2 this passed Sunday - we had cake and coffee at my moms with my siblings and DH's mom (FIL & SIL live OOS).

We invited our one set of friends who we always hang out with and DS gets along great with their children.

That was it...he had a great time running around with his cousin and our friends children.

I told DH that I will keep it this way as long as I can. When he starts to ask for a party with school friends - even that will stay small.

I'm not into big parties for kids - growing up I had parties in my back yard with pizza and a Carvel cake with just my cousins. I loved everyone of them.

We do a big 1st birthday b/c we have a lot of family but after that we have done and will continue to do play places. The precedent is set that the people who weren't invited to birthday #2 will no longer be invited period, lol, and they probably didn't want to come anyway!

Unfortunately for you all these people "expect" to be invited again. Imho I might invite them this year to avoid drama and in the future I would do it at a party place b/c people understand the space/age restrictions with that.

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

My philosophy is this, Their first 5 years we have a big party. After that it will be family only or just cupcakes with friends at school. every party is over 500 bucks and I have 2 kids! So you have to draw the line somewhere!

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

We did a Big 1st birthday party for all family/friends...but we did not have a christening or baptism or anything like that. Since then, just small family parties. We often do it somewhere like a farm or bowling or something, but its just family fun and not too much $$.

I will have 1 big party for the first birthday and then that's it. Just family after that, then when they are in school they can have kid parties with their friends, and we'll have my dad and brothers over for cake...

Re: when do you say enough big parties....

DS had a bris and DD had a baby naming party. I had the family over for the first birthdays. I have done friends parties since then. Now that DS has started kindergarten I am not sure what we are going to do. Since his birthday is in the summer we will see what happens during the year. My neighbors have said that by 2nd grade birthday parties are just a few close friends and not the whole class.
