I BF DS for 21 months. By 14-15 months it really was only morning and night. I slowly dropped the night and by 21 months I dropped the morning. Even though your DC is not getting a lot, she/he is still getting nutrients and antibodies. You should continue it as long as you and your LO feel comfortable.

Re: Whe did you stop breastfeeding?

DS still nurses a ton at almost 18 months old. I don't see him stopping any time soon.

Whe did you stop breastfeeding?

We are at 4.5 months and I almost gave up as of this morning! Out of nowhere I started doubting myself and was giving myself such anxiety the past few days thinking she wasn't getting enough. I called my mom in tears and said I thought I was done. I called the dr. and brought her for a weight check. She was up a little more than the average and her percentile went up one too (not a lot but I was braced for a drop). The doctor really reassured me and I'm trying to get the anxiety to disappear. My goal is to reach a year or more. The stress of not knowing if they're getting enough is so hard. I thought I was long past it but it somehow creeped back in. If you're worried, go for a weight check. As my ped told me today, the numbers don't lie. GL

Whe did you stop breastfeeding?

DS is 4.5 mths and each day that passes I want to call it quits but I dont because I know Im giving him the best and I love the bonding. What I hate is the freaking pumping. I absolutely HATE IT. If it wasnt for that I would have no problem. I also know that since I started work I am not producing as much as I use too which is disappointing but I figure something is better than nothing. Do what you feel comfortable with. If you can stick it out a little longer, go for it. If not, dont beat yourself over it Chat Icon

Re: Whe did you stop breastfeeding?

IF you dont want to stop here are some tips:

water
oatmeal
mother's milk
nurse more

Why do you think you're not making enough?

My DD is 11.5 months and still nursing. I'm going to cut down to 1-2 sessions when she turns 1 and then probably have her wean and stop around 13 months.

What makes you think you're not producing enough?

I BF DD for 14.5 months. Tentatively hoping to make it to 18 months with this baby.

What you pump doesnt = what you're making. Your baby is more efficient than the pump. I rarely leaked or felt a letdown, and that's normal too.

As long as the baby seems satisfied, is pooping, and is hitting milestones, you're probably fine!

Hang in there mama. Sounds like you're doing fine so far!

Not feeling full is totally normal at this point. Also, the pumping is not much indication of what the baby gets. If I pump a half hour after her first feeding I get about 3 ounces, sometimes more, sometimes less. She takes 5-6 at a feeding so I need two days of pumping just to get one bottle. Pumping any other time of day for me is not worth what I get, which is pretty much nothing! Pumping to me is one of the few negatives of bfing.

Does your LO have a 3 month check up coming soon? I would see if you can hold out or as I mention before, you can always bring LO in for an extra weight check between appointments. Also, if you don't feel like you can keep up, you can always consider leaving formula for when you're away for a wedding or something long like that.

As someone who just went through similar feelings and fears, I'd say take it one day or feeding at a time. If you make it through, you'll be so glad.Chat Icon

i used to feel full and leak - and i don't anymore. does that mean theres been a letodwn? or are my breasts just getting used to nursing?

It means that your supply is matching your baby's needs, it's a good thing!

It's hard to pump additionally to nursing full time, but if you keep at it, you'll eventually start making more for that pumping session.

Your supply is regulating, which happens around 3 months. It's totally normal to not feel as full or leak now. That doesn't mean your supply is low. As long as DC is peeing, pooping and gaining weight, you're doing fine. Also, as long as DC seems satisfied and can go at least a few hours between feedings, your supply is good.

A pump is not a good indication of what you produce. The pump is not as efficient as a baby. Some women also don't respond well to the pump. If you're concerned about your supply, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating enough calories. You can also look into supplements such as Mother's Milk Tea or More Milk Plus.

I BF DS1 for 15 months and hope to go at least that long with DS2.
