Re: when you stop breastfeeding..
I just pumped as little as possible when I was really really full...just until I was comfortable...however often I needed to.

Definitely wean---do not stop cold turkey. I gave myself a 2 week transition period and I was fine. I hear other women's horror stories and it makes me cringe!

If he has to stop 'cold turkey' can you "wean" yourself using the pump?

Yes, absolutely. Actually that was how I weaned. DD had cut me off so I decreased my pumping sessions slowly.

Re: when you stop breastfeeding..
I'd suggest weaning with the pump also.

Do not empty. Basically, your body works on the principle of supply & demand. If you "demand" your body to give all of the milk at each feeding then it will continue to assume that you need that high of a supply and your milk production will not decrease. Just pump enough to ease your discomfort.
As for the lumps, you can try to massage them a bit. A few other suggestions----try applying ice packs or a bag of frozen veggies (my preference). Women also swear by cabbage leaves on the breasts too. Wear a sports bra or 2 both during the day and when you sleep---this type of constriction will inhibit milk production.
When you shower, try not to let the warm water directly hit your breasts. It can stimulate them to have a let down response.
If all else fails, I believe there are some herbal suppliments that can help dry up milk ducts. I am just not informed enough about it to give you any specifics but you may be able to find it with an internet search.
Good luck!

If you are in pain and aren't against taking a pain killer, motrin should help.
I really weaned slowly so it took 2 weeks. I weaned at 11 months so I didn't have an incredible milk production at that point. It sounds like you are in the full swing of milk production, hence your discomfort. Just be patient and realistic. Hopefully you have a little time to let your milk dwindle before calling it quits 100%.

Re: when you stop breastfeeding..
I slowly weaned over a couple of weeks time like someone else had posted, I never really pumped so I would just slowly drop feedings and give formula instead and I didn't have any pain or discomfort because of it.

I just didn't stop cold turkey. I weaned the baby and honestly, no pain, or minimal.

Re: when you stop breastfeeding..
I had to stop cold turkey at 2 and a half months because were cross contaminating each other with thrush. In order to relieve engorgement, I pumped and then weaned my boobs (not Abby), I went further between pumpings and then went from the electric to handheld. Then I did it manually in the shower. It took about 2 weeks.
