Whats so great about Disney??

I have never been to Disney World. Not as a child or as an adult. My Dh has been a few times as a kid and basically said it was ok but wasnt his favorite vacation. He really has no desire to go back but would for the kids
Can someone fill me in on why so many people love it? Is it just for kids or do the parents enjoy themselves too?

Re: Whats so great about Disney??

I think it's very personal. Some people absolutely love everything Disney- the parks, the cruises, the characters, the hotels, the dining, etc...
DH and I are not Disney fanatics. We do enjoy it, but we do it our own way. We go to our timeshare every year, so we never feel we need to do everything every time. We choose one park per trip. The kids absolutely love it and we love seeing it through their eyes. But vacation to us isn't about being busy every minute of every day. We really enjoy relaxing by the pool and being on our own schedule for the week. It's what works for us.

I'd love to know. Been as a child and as an adult and had the same Chat Icon Chat Icon reaction to it. Different strokes and all that. What I think a great vacation is may not be to everyones taste either.

ETA: I still REALLY wish they would give the Disney questions a subforum considering how often the same questions are asked over and over.

I agree with the subforum. I came on here for vacation ideas and all I see is Disney posts. That's what actually prompted my question. Seems like so many people love it there.

Re: Whats so great about Disney??

I LOVE Disney!

I never got to go as a kid and always dreamed of it, so it was so much more magical for me as an adult. I love so much about it. First of all, I LOVE Disney movies and Disney characters and I always have. I'm an adult and I still enjoy watching the Disney movies from my childhood, so I like to see them come to life.

I enjoy theme parks in general. I love rides and rollercoasters. What impresses me about Disney parks above other parks is that they are so well run and ridiculously clean especially considering the number of people who come through there. The rides are never just rides. Every attraction tells a story and has so many little details you can notice.

Even every restaurant tells a story. You're never just sitting in a cafeteria. It always fits into a theme. Did you notice that every land has its own style of trash cans, lampposts, paving, benches, etc? I like being immersed, which is also why I like to stay on property.

I love the events. Disney just takes Halloween and Christmas up several notches.

I love that there is just endless stuff to do. DH and I have gone many times (Next trip-30 days!), and we discover something new every time. It's the most fun if you can stop and take notice of the small things -Random musicians and parades, interacting with streetmosphere, pulling Indy's rope, etc,and if you get involved. We had a BLAST doing the stunt part of the Backlot tour, and on the same day I got DH chosen to be part of the Indy show.

The dining is awesome. Some of it medicore theme park food, but there are a lot of really cool dining experiences, both in terms of uniqye experiences (Prime Time 50's, Whispering Canyon Cafe) and just really awesome food.

I also LOVE Disney Cruises. They're seriously amazing. I think overall Disney has a level of attention to detail no one else can rival.

I know some people are just not into it, and that's fine, but I do think a lot of people who have done Disney and didn't like it just didn't plan well.

I've heard some people say there were no rides because they thought the rides they could see from outside were all that existed. I've heard a LOT of people complain about lines because they arrived at the park at the busiest time of day and also didn't know how to use fastpass. I've heard SO many complaints that were just due to simple things that the person did not know or understand. If you have some planning, you can have a great time at Disney and avoid the pitfalls. I LOVE going as adults only because we can go where we want when we want. That willl change with kids, but then I'll get to see it all through their eyes, so it will be great.

I went twice as I kid. One trip I don't remember and another just Hollywood Studios that I barely remember. Anyway, we are going in a few months. I'm not sure of the hype. However, my gma who is a very cynical person went this month with my uncle and kiddos and she is still raving. She really found magic there, lol, and now I'm even more intrigued.

It's such a family friendly place that is sparkling clean you could eat off the ground! Chat Icon I love to see how happy my children are there, so that is why we go. Plus, as often as you hear how expensive it is, it's actually a very good value (if you are going the economical route and staying at the less expensive onsite options) compared to many other family destinations IMO.

it's true about it being economical. People can't believe how much we go to Disney because they assume we are spending $10K every time. It's really not so expensive compared to other places, especially with what you get for the price. An aduly 8 day ticket is about $37 per day. For $37 you're getting rides, full scale shows, parades, fireworks, etc. it's endless. A HUGE amount of entertainment. It's cheapaer than , say a day in NYC or Mystic where you'd be paying for each individual admission to a show, museum, tour, etc. Plus with a package you get free mini golf, free arcade credits, and if you do the dining plan, that spending is controlled too.

Whats so great about Disney??

I never went there as a child and the first time I went I was in my late 20s. It was not for me. Maybe when you grow up going, it brings back memories and I can see that as an appeal. But if I never went again, I would be fine with that.

Just wanted to add, haunted mansion was my favorite ride though. Chat Icon

I still cannot see the appeal. I try to and just can't. Like PP said: different strokes....

And I 150% agree there needs to be a Disney Forum, or at the the very least rename this forum from Travel & Vacations to Disney Vacations & questions.

I never went to Disney as a kid...only as an adult. I have enjoyed the 2 times I have been (well 3 since once was CA). I will take my DS there but I willnto go every year or so. We enjoy different places so we wouldn't go to any one place all the time.

With Dinsey I think it is all in the details....they think of absolutely everything. I think everyone should go at least once and its not just for kids.

I love Disney - but different strokes for different folks. I think it's one of those things you either get or don't get.

I also love to travel the rest of the world. I agree that there should be a Disney subforum on here too. Sometimes some of the other posts get lost because of all the Disney posts.

Whats so great about Disney??

The first time I went to Disney I was 16 and thought it was totally lame. I had been to all the big amusement parks on the east coast with all the fabulous roller coasters, and Magic Kingdom was tame by comparison.

Last December I went for the second time with my 4 year old. To see her eyes light up when she met Snow White was amazing. I spend the majority of that trip standing on lines to do character meet and greets because it was her first trip and she was all about princesses - but each time she interacted with a character it was a joy to behold. In between I got to see the Candlelight Processional, and Fantasmic, and the Pixar Pals parade; I saw the Osbourne Family Lights, and snow on Main Street; I rode Mt. Everest and the Rockin' Roller Coaster (nothing tame or lame about either), and I discovered that there is so much more to Disney than appears on the surface.

I never went as a kid. So far I have bee twice, once w dh and then with the kids. Both times were amazing, just love it! I won't go every year bc it is not relaxing, at all! But I can't wait to go back. It's such a nice, clean, happy place! I findit to be expensive though, especially with kids.

I love disney bc it is just fun, and magical watching my girls eyes totally light up. I like disney bc you can do more adult or more kids activities. The have spas, parks with rides, shows etc, fun restaurants etc. While I love it and enjoy going I do other trips too. But disney will always be fun. I have been to Asia, all over Europe, all over the US, on about 15 cruises (none on the disney cruiseline though), I have been to Hawaii, all over the Caribbean etc. I like to go to musems (was an art history major), snorkel, see new places. But disney is just a fun trip it is an active trip for us, but I guess I just love seeing the magic in my girls eyes. I find that friends who were unsure all end up loving it. Disney offers something everyone but many people don't always know this. They just think park food and rides. But there are some nice restaurants, spas, parasailing, AKL for example offers tours of their african art. AK offers educational tours about the animals, EPCOT has tours about various typics- i.e hydroponics etc. Personally I don't like places like great adventure etc. If I go it is for the kids onky or bc a friend insisted on going. I also love cruises others don't. Everyone needs to find a trip that suits there needs. I have stayed at top resorts on various islands in the past and they seem boring after 2-3 days so for me I don't see the appeal of an all inclusive. I think it is a place to go once when you have kids but if you go you should go with an open mind but definitely research in advance and maybe talk to a travel agent so that you plan your trip with your personal interests. Just like with cruise ships. If you pick the wrong line or ship you might be miserable but the right line and ship you might have an amazing trip.

I just loooove everything about Disney, to me it truly is magical. But I do find the younger, and more often you have been, has an effect on how much you love it. (I know this isn't always the case, just an observation of those that I know) DH went once as a teen and then didn't go again until he was an adult and while he enjoys it, he isn't in love with it like me. I basically grew up going to Disney and it is so full of memories and special moments. I even got engaged to DH in front of the castle!!!

I feel like it is such an escape and you can't help but be happy and feel like a kid again. I just think Disney World is wonderful, my favorite place ever!!!! Chat Icon

More in common. I also love Disney (duh) and we also got engaged there. I totally kill your theory though since I didn't go until I was 20.

5th birthday is HUGE! I'm planning like 5th birthday trips. My kids, however, will likely go in utero, and at all ages because I'm crazy like that.

Honestly, if it were up to just me our DD would've been countless times by now but DH is all "fiscally responsible" Chat Icon and he also wanted her to be old enough to really appreciate it.

Chat Icon It hasn't been easy........trust me. lol

When we got engaged in front of the castle it was during one of their birthday celebrations and the castle looked like a huge, pink frosted birthday cake. It was so cool.

I went once or twice as a kid, and never understood it either... however we brought our kids for the first time last summer, just for a day to MK, and it was so magical... they were so happy and excited, and seeing it through their eyes was just awesome. We went back this summer for an entire week, and had the same experience! They just loved it! (We did sneak back one night without the kids, and to me it was not the same)

Whats so great about Disney??

I understand it for kids because when I was a kid I absolutely was in awe of the entire experience. What I don't understand is adults with the obsession. I never got it. Different strokes for different folks I guess but the bumper stickers, Tinkerbell steering wheel covers, and all the quirky things about it are kinda strange to me. lol

DH & I both love Disney! I never went as a kid, and I always dreamed of going! We love the Disney movies & they really do come to life at the parks! I love Disney World because it is magical, and it is very detailed. We have so much fun everytime we go! The food is delcious too! Different strokes definitely, but we love it! I've been there 3 times & I never stayed on site. Our next trip (which will probably be in april), we plan to stay at a Disney resort & I can't wait! It's an amazing family vacation with little ones.
I would love a subforum!!
