question about bfeeding

If your milk doesnt fully come in until a few days after birth, how is it possible to exclusively bfeed?

May be a dumb question but Im curious.

question about bfeeding

Not a dumb question at all! Before your milk comes in, you produce a sort of "pre-milk" called colostrum. It's a thick, yellowish substance that is packed with nutrients for your newborn. When a baby is born, their stomach is about the size of a ping pong ball, and this colostrum is all they need to fill up!

Re: question about bfeeding

baby doesn't need milk for a few days. Colostrum is what comes out. Just keep the baby on the breast.

if it doesnt come for a few days don't beat yourself up for giving formula until you get milk.

good luck

Re: question about bfeeding

Like the others have said, the baby's stomach is teeny-tiny the first few days. Plus, they're "full" for almost the first whole day from the nutrients they were receiving from you until the cord was cut. A whole breastfeeding session in the beginning (which might take 40 minutes!) produces about a teaspoon of colostrum, IIRC. And that's all they need at the time. That's also why you feed them every 2 hours!

Re: question about bfeeding

Because your body produces colostrum (sp) first, which is SOOOO very good for the baby. That is all baby needs at first. It has a lot of antibodies and good stuff for your baby.

ITA with the other posters and the image! Just keep nursing the babies; you'll be fine.
