I'm a SAHM and quite honestly people make nasty comments both ways. I really feel like the kind of people who make nasty comments like that are insecure in their own decision so they need to bring you down so they can feel better about themselves.

After a while you learn to consider the source of the comment.

Comments about working moms...

I get comments all the time. I would love to stay home with my girls but my job has excellent insurance and I make more money then my DH so we could never do that. Just yesterday a co-worker who has kids but they are my age says to me oh how do you leave the twins everyday it must be so hard. I wanted to say yes it is and thank you for reminding me. I have told some people do you want to pay my mortgage? That usually shuts them up.

When I say the kids are in daycare 3 days a week I get a look oh pity. I always say no its a good thing they are happy and being taken care of while learning new things every day.

I've been ftwm and SAHM, and got comments on both sides. Not malicious , I think people are just curious about decisions that we as mothers make.

Comments about working moms...

My answers:

Cause I enjoy money
Why have less when you can have more
I like that I can teach my children Mommy's can work and make money too
Cause I need that break, that adult stimulation
I appreciate the time I have with my family more

I'm more sick of the "ohhh..they are in daycare". They say it as if the children are tied to chairs and placed in a corner for 8 hours.

I got it yesterday.

Salon Lady : "oh, who watches them?"
Me :Tutor Time
Salon Lady :"oh..they are at daycare? you dont have anyone to watch them ?"

Me : "Dont feel bad for them, they love it! They have friends all day. Today they had a magic show, they have a fun activity everyday. They are happy"

So SICK of being made to feel like a bad parent because they are in daycare. So if they sat in the house the entire day with my 70+ parent, that would be better/ok ?

uuuggghhh I have stopped acknowledging people that have made these kinds of comments to me.

Clearly we are not meant to continue our conversation.

Can't talk longer....gotta go back to work.

Re: Comments about working moms...

I actually got the opposite when I chose to stay home when DS#2 was born. People were really surprised that I didn't go back to work.

I don't know if it was my imagination but I felt like people looked down at me when I met someone and I told them I took time off to stay home with my kids. I remember bumping into an old classmate and being embarassed that I wasn't working. Another time I bumped into an old coworker on the street while I was pushing a stroller. I could tell he wrote me off as a mommy and I felt terrible. He congratulated me of course but I still felt bad. I could go on and on.

I currently work part time and am very happy. Both SAHMs and FTWMs seem to think working PT is ideal. I would recommend it to anyone if it is an option.

Re: Comments about working moms...

I went back to work when my girls were 13 weeks...it killed me! Someone in my family said to me "ooooh I didn't realize you went back, why did you." Um I don't know I am not independently wealthy!

I am a teacher and live for the summer being home with my girls when I write a status update saying I am upset about going back to work I can count on one person to always write "atleast you have a job." Yeah asshole I know that but I would much rather be home raising my kids!

Re: Comments about working moms...

My MIL has horrible opinions of working moms. She flat out said to me once that anyone who can't stay home with their kid shouldn't have one.Chat Icon

A couple of women gave me sympathetic looks when they found out I work, but no one has really made any comments about it. To be honest, even if they did, it wouldn't bother me. I NEED to work, for financial reasons and for my own sanity. I am so not cut out to be a SAHM and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I think it's the single most difficult job there is. I love my job and really feel like working makes me a better mom.

Now comments about DD being in daycare is a whole other story... Those irk me to no end. Yes she's in daycare, and I couldn't be happier about it. My MIL watched her in the beginning and it was horrible. Even DD was miserable. Now she is the happiest baby you will meet. Even the daycare owner told me the other day that every parent wishes they could have a kid like mine. It's a complete 180 from what she was like with my MIL. So yeah, she's in daycare and the arm and leg it costs me is completely worth it!

Hey hey now!! My DD is home with my almost 70 year old parents 4 days a week! lol Chat Icon It saves us money but I agree daycare can be great for kids, I try to make sure that my parents take her to some classes/ and or that her cousins who are her age come over to play a couple of times a week .. but i digress, i think the point again is there is no one right way to do things, we all do what works for us, so people should just shut butt out!

I have a "friend"' who, before she had a child would say things like, "I don't know how you can let somebody else raise them" & "I know I would never be able to leave them". She recently had a baby & had to go back to work, and at the same time, we moved & DH & I decided it didn't pay for me to work anymore. The last time I spoke to this person, she said, "I can't believe you're not going to work. What's that going to do to your resume?" Chat Icon

Re: Comments about working moms...

This is exactly the thread I needed to read this morning! I'm just finishing my second week back to work after being home with DD for 3 months. The first week was so tough, but this week was much better. Of course, this morning, DD was the happiest, cutest baby in the world, so walking out the door was tough. Thankfully, tomorrow is Saturday!

I haven't gotten any comments like these...yet. My commute and hours give me about 3 hours max awake time with my DD M-F. It sucks. But, like a lot of you, I worked really hard to ge to where I am in my career, and am absolutely fine with my decision. Me working is what's best for her and my family, but that doesn't change how hard it can be. So I am glad to hear all of your perspectives on the matter!

Now, if I could just win the lottery....:)

Yeah I have heard this one.
Some people act like daycare is some kind of prison camp.
THey are like- but doesn't she get sick a lot?
Umm no- she is rarely sick.
To be honest- I'd rather her in daycare. Even if I had teh choice she'd be in daycare. I like the socialization. I like the fact that she is with other kids and is also used to someoen other than a family member caring for her.
To me, it will make the transition to school a bit easier.
