Re: Spinoff to expenses...

I did not work more than a few summer tutoring jobs and one receptionist job while I was in college. My parents wanted me to focus on school.

That being said, I think its a great idea for teenagers to have a job. I think it prepares them for the real world and builds good habits (punctuality, responsibility etc). I wouldn't want her working a lot though. Maybe a couple of days a week.

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

My parents always said that school was my job. I was allowed to work PT beginning in 10th grade as long as it did not affect my school work. I also worked PT in the summer thru college. I worked by choice to have extra spending money. I would want my kids to do the same.

Spinoff to expenses...

I worked summers during high school and tutored during the school year. I was very involved in sports and extracurriculars. I will expect the same from my kids. College I worked a lot, by choice, bc I wanted $ Ti do things I didn't think my parents should have to subsidize, ie shopping, going out to eat and drink, travel. I believe I will help my kids financially during college but will expect them to work for the extras

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

I want my kids to work after the junior year of high school. If they are great in a sport (potential scholarship, not cheerleading or similar) then they can focus on that. If they are seriously straight A students, then they can just focus on school. If the kids are B students and not really into a sports I want them working.I was a B student (didnt study) and did not like sports, so I worked a lot of hours.

In college I worked 2 jobs and my grades were much better. A kid can get A's and work.

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

I definitely was not expected to work while in high school, and never did, not even summers. In college, it wasn't expected that I work either - I dormed and my parents sent me money for any extra living expenses every month (and brought me things when they visited, I went to school in NYC).

I did work a couple of summers while in college but didn't have to. For my parents, school was to be my absolute priority - it was my "job." As long as I excelled in school, I was doing my part.

I do not want nor expect my DS to work while in high school. It will be up to him whether he works summers while in college. I do not want him to work during the academic year while in college (except maybe work study).

I'm sorry, but that's pretty insulting. I cheered in high school and I now teach dance for a living. So that was actually time well spent. And scholarships are available for cheer leading.
And what if they're not great at a sport, but they really enjoy it? There is a lot to be learned from being part of a team, even if there is no scholarship waiting in the end.

Spinoff to expenses...

I worked when I was a senior in HS at a shoe store, it was a good way to earn money. I am not sure how I feel about my kids working, I think it would depend on what type of activities they are involved in. If they do not play sports or anything, then I think they should work.

ETA: Just read the post above. I think that if a child is not doing an activity of any sort, be it a sport or playing an instrument etc, then they should be doing something. I don't want my kids hanging out doing nothing.

I worked from 14- present... I liked having my own money, but wish my parents made me save some more. I do want my kids to work even if its just summer and one or two night per week so they have some understanding of working for what you want

Yes, I would like my children to work.

I got a job the day I turned 16. I worked 2 nights a week. I was also a 3 sport athlete and on the honor roll. I think balancing it all taught me to prioritize and manage my time well.

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

I do want my DC to work but not too hard! I want them to be responsible, have time to study, play sports and have fun! When I was 16 I wanted a PT job where all of my friends worked and my parents said no. Cant remember what their reason was, maybe they didnt want to have to drive me and pick me up from there? I got my first job when I was a senior in HS and I worked PT during college but nothing too crazy at all. I grew up to be extremely responsible and Im very good with money. Now I work in a very tough field and have been busting my you know what for over 10 years since I have graduated college! Its a good thing I didnt work too hard when I was young, I would be exhausted!

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

Both DH and I had jobs at 15. I only worked on weekends during sports seasons but the rest of the year I can remember walking with about 5 other friends after school to an area where a bunch of us worked (king kullen, mcdonalds and carvel) I also did MULTIPLE club activities, honors student, etc. At 16.5yo I became a swim instructor which was the best job for a teen. I did that until I was 21 and felt I should get a more "real" job.

DH and I both feel our sons will work. Depending on their other activities will depend on how often, etc. But I think its really important to learn to manage money, what it feels like to earn your own money, how to be responsible to come to work each day etc.

I can not believe that everyone would want their child working at such a young age. My parents wanted us to focus on being kids. We either played on a traveling team or went to summer camp. Even in college, my dad would always say that "I am spending so much money on this, make it the best time ever (and get good grades)."

I loved pp idea of having their kid spend their summer focusing on a project. Also, during the summer is a great time to bond with your family. I remember many nights playing games, or just watching tv with my parents. Don't get me wrong...I went out with friends many nights too, but on the other nights, I was with my family.

Kids need to focus on school, ESPECIALLY at 15/16/17. Colleges look for kids for scholarships based on sports/academics at that age. I do not want my child focusing on scanning items at the supermarket instead of studying.

Part time during the summer yes, so they have money to spend for recreational things.

If they want a car or cell phones, then not working will not be an option. I dont want them working while school is in session. Having a little responsibility during the summer months wont kill them though. I just dont want them working as early as I did. I got my working papers when I was 14. That is ridiculous. No earlier than 16.

Yes they will work, but if grades start to suffer, then the job will be the first thing to go.

I worked during HS and DH worked on the weekends and summers in HS. School comes first in our house but if they can handle the job they will be working also.

With all due respect, I don't think these things are mutually exclusive. I worked, was involved in sports/clubs, Spent time with my family, had fun, and got scholarships to all of the non-Ivy league schools to which I applied. Many of my friends who didn't work didn't spend that time studying either!

Re: Spinoff to expenses...

I would not want my kids to work in high school during the school year unless it was for some sort of academic or professional gain.

I would want my kids to intern in college. This can either be paid or unpaid.

ITA. I was able to do everything at school, had fun with my friends and still hold a pt job. It's all about balance. And I believe it makes for a well rounded individual.

No, I don't want them to work during the school year. I want them to direct their attention toward excelling academically. As for the summer, I would strongly prefer that they intern/ take classes/ volunteer/ travel than spend their days at a menial job. I want them to use those years to learn, expand creativity and enjoy unique life experiences.

NOT all kids have the privilege of not having to work and having their parents provide them with their spending money, clothes, school activities, a car etc.

My mom was a widow at 40 years old with 3 kids under the age of 10. She worked her asss off to make sure she could afford to pay the mortgage, our school tuition, the bills and put some into savings.

When we were teenagers and wanted spending money, new clothes, cds, etc., we needed to get jobs to pay for all of that.

She just couldn't afford to pay for all of that plus what she NEEDED to pay.

So we worked and we learned how to balance that with school since they were BOTH our jobs. Having a part time job doesn't take away from being a child.

I was still able to be a teenager, I just had more responsibility then my friends who didn't work.

My DS will get a job in the summer time once he turns 15. I won't let him just hang out and do nothing. If he wants a cell phone, he will need to get a job after school to pay for the bill. We will help out with whatever we can - like my mom did for me.

I didn't get everything I wanted, whatever I got from my mom I knew she worked hard to get it or save for it.

I started working at the age of 14. I worked the maximum number of hours allowed. At 15 I started working at the supermarket. . .scanning items. I quickly moved up to customer service, running the front end and bookkeeping. I worked every day after school and opened up at 6AM on the weekends.

I got a full scholarship to St John's University and went on to get my masters there in ONE year in the accelerated program. All while working over 20 hours a week.

Academics CAN be enough for scholarships. Thank god for that b/c I have no other talents LOL

I learned to manage my time and I learned responsibility. I hope that DD will learn the same. I will help her financially with the important things. . .but she WILL be working and the minute she stops, all financial help stops. Unless she is training for the Olympics - she will have time to excel in school AND have a part time job.

Your mother sounds llke a wonderful woman. I was assuming in my post thall all would stay the same within my family dynamic, BUT you are right, there are always unforseeable circumstances that you can not plan for.
