Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
I actually feel really strongly that no one should.
Pediatrician say "no crowds" for a month... why have one at the kid's birth?
Even if you wash your hands & purell them... there still are bacteria & viruses on them.
I've seen people have their babies re-admitted to the hospital shortly after birth to have IV antibiotics after an infection with a skin bacteria (hmmmm).
I'd never take my kid to visit a baby... but HAD people bring their kids to visit mine... young kids. I even had asked them not to/to take shifts with the kids in the lobby.
I only had us (DH and I) & my parents hold our babies when they were born. I do not regret it & don't really care if anyone was insulted.
Likewise when I go visit someone at the hospital... I always bring a gift, say hello to mom, say hello to baby and DO NOT TOUCH the baby.

This is your choice and I would respect it because it is your choice and espeically for the fact that you do not hold other people's babies when they are 1st born. I have a friend who came to the hospital with her husband and sister (a sister I barely knew) and they all held my DS. I thought for a split second that it was a little strange that thi sperson who I barely knew came to visit me and held my baby but I'm more a go with the flow type of person. Fast forward a year and friend has her 1st baby. I went to the house to visit because she delivered at a hospital with visitor unfriendly hours. She asked me to tak eoff my shoes, wash and use purell and did not offer to have me hold the baby. Basically kept the baby hidden. I have seen the baby about 3 times in 8 months and I have never held her baby. I am rather annoyed at this but will know better for my next baby.
To answer the original question, everyone that came and wanted to hold DS did. One other friend even brought her daugther (3 yrs) in to the room real quick. That didn't thrill me but she came in said hello and left so I didn't make a fuss.

Everyone who wanted to that wasn't sick. I also took him out and about within days. I just dont get keeping them hidden from the world in the beginning (unless its dead winter).

If people felt we were important enough to visit, then they were important enough to hold the baby. (after they washed their hands)
Ditto! We didn't have any kids visiting but I think I may have been a little concerned if there were. Otherwise, everyone who visited and wanted to hold him did.

Only my DH and myself. She was in NICU anyway, so that was partly why.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
Everyone who came to visit held my babies. I wouldn't dream of telling people no after they made the effort to come see me.
I've held every baby I've ever visited as well.

Who held your baby in the hospital?
just the grandparents since the babies were in the nicu. it was actually the perfect set up- since they were in the nicu only as protocol (born before 37 weeks) so ONLY parents nad grand parents are allowed in there. everyone else could just look through the window.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
oh, sensitive subject for me.
The hospital didn't allow children to visit, only siblings, so that was good.
And during regular visiting hours, the babies were in the nursery, behind the glass.
But during the grandparent visiting hours, the babies are out in the rooms with the moms, and ONLY the grandparents are supposed to come in (and siblings of course). That didn't stop other family members from coming in and passing around my son like a hot potato. In 30 minutes, no less than 8 people held my newborn, not including the nurse. I wasn't too happy about that. Three years later it still pisses me off.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
I'm a 1st time mom to be, my babes is due next Thurs. This is actually an issue that is causing me some anxiety right now. I'm sure its primarily hormonal induced but I am freaking out about everyone touching my baby. I have already had this discussion w/DH and I know he is but says he is going along w/however I want to handle it.
I am praying the baby comes in the middle of the night so I dont have to deal w/20 ppl coming to the hospital right after I give birth.
So if I can control the situation, I only want myself, DH, My IL, my father, SIL & my 2 BILs to be able to touch the babes.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
As someone else said, one good thing about a baby in the NICU is that you don't have to worry about this. Especially since I had mine in Oct 2009 and everyone was worried about the flu and the swine flu. I was glad that they were in covered isolettes.

Me, dh, my mom and mil. All had hands washed before they held her.
With my first, no one did. She was rushed to the nicu. I didn't get to hold her until the next day.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
When I delivered DS visiting hours to the "Public" were from 7-8 and during that hour, all babies are in the nursery. During the day ONLY grandparents were allowed to visit while baby was in the room. My sister did come in, which of course was totally fine with me. I wanted her there. I warned friends and family that the hospital was strict with visiting hours and I had no "surprises".
When DD was born (different hospital) she pretty much went right into NICU after DH and I kissed her and took a few quick pics. If I'm not mistaken, I think they let my dad, inlaws and sister in (2 at a time) to look at DD (but not hold). I am not 100% sure how this worked. I was in recovery from C Section.
If either of them were in my room with me for visitors, I would've asked all adults to wash hands really good and feel free to hold. I probably would've asked kids to wash REALLY good and would've told them they can touch babies feet.

Mine were in the NICU. So only grandparents were allowed in. My mom, dad, and stepmom were the only ones to hold the babies.

Re: Who held your baby in the hospital?
My parents ad DH parents, but they were the only ones who visited us in the hospital lol I wouldn't have allowed kids. I wasn't really up for visitors anyway.
