Help me understand..(school related)

as far as I understand 3&4 they should be in preschool then 5-6 they start kindergarten. I would guess you could call your school district and ask for the enrollment dates. They usually have a cut off like all kids up to a certain date are 1 school year and after that date are the next school year Chat Icon HTH

My daughter was born September 2008 and she will start UPK in September. She will be three, almost four. The following year she will start Kindergarten when she is four almost five. The cutoff for my district requires kids to be five by December. I think you should look into your district's policy, but I'm pretty sure it is similar across the island. She should start when she is four. I know it seems young but many students start Kindergarten at four years old.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

I think it is up to you if you want to send her or hold her back one more year. My birthday is Nov. 30 and I was always the youngest in the class.

Depending on where you live around here cutoff is Dec. So she would start when she is 4 turning 5 unless you hold her back a year.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

Cutoffs vary from state to state.

DH is a November birthday. He was originally held back because he did not make the cutoff. He moved a few years later and eventually skipped a grade and was back in his rightful grade. he was usually the youngest in his grade. He started college at 17.

In VA (where we live now), redshirting is somewhat controversial. Parents try to keep the child back so they can have an academic edge.

Assuming a 12/1 cutoff - she can go when she's 4, but it is totally up to you.

DD was born the end of October and she is starting this September. She will be 4 for the first 6 weeks of school or so.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

I was a november birthday, and always the youngest, and was always fine with it. The only time it was annoying was being the last to drive, drink, etc... but that has nothing to do with success in school.

DD is December 21st. She's starting nursery school this fall in the 2's class even thought she'll be one of the oldest. But its just a 3 half-day program.

When she's eligible for UPK, the following year, when she's 3 turning 4 I'm sending her.

It depends on your districts cut off date. She could go to K and be one of the youngest in her class. It depends on the child how they will do. Some children are fine others have to stay the extra year in kindergarten. Maturity is a big issue.

same. In NYC the cutoff is Dec. I started Kindergarten at 4 (12/7 birthday). I *think* my mom could have held me back a year if she wanted. DS is 10/6 so he will start Kindergarten at 4.

I'm a November bday and was always one of the youngest in my class, too, but that was fine with me.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

This is a concern for me. NY still has a December cutoff, but many other states have switched to August. Many parents "redshirt" their kids and hold them back. So if DS starts K at 4, there will be 6 year olds with him. Is that fair? There was recently a piece on the news about this, and something to think about. I think you need to look at the maturity level of your own DC and make a decision.
Just wanted to add, I work in a private school and went to private schools, where redshirting is probably more common. I also went to school in MD, where the cutoff is now August so I feel more conflicted than our friends.

I agree that it is your choice. Somethings to think about is her abilities and her maturity. Most girls are fine being the youngest, but it certainly does not hurt to be the oldest:)

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

There are several things to consider:
1) Your school districts cut off date. Most are December, but as others mentioned, some districts are changing to August. You can contact your local school districts elementary school or district office to find out.
2) Your child's pre-k teachers recommendation. All children mature and progress at a different rate. Towards the end of the school year, you will probably meet with her and she can give you some insight into whether your DD is socially and academically 'ready' for kindergarden, or whether another year in prek would be better.
3) Your and your DH's gut feeling. Think short term and long term. Does she really seem ready at 4 for kindergarden? Some kids totally are, some not so much. Are you comfortable with her always being one the youngest in her grade? Last to drive? Starting college at 17? Needing to use a fake id in her senior year of college? Chat Icon Jk. It's just something you want to think about and make the decision you are most comfortable with. Best of luck!!

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

our son that we're adopting was born 11/9/10. we live in NJ, and i think our districts cut off is that they have to be 5 by end of september. So... he will be 5, almost 6 when he starts kindergarten.
because boys tend to be a little bit slower than girls with maturity, i think that will be good for him to be older when he starts- we'll make sure he's in some kind of pre-K program and work with her at home to keep him learning
so i think it depends on the cut off for your district.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

I guess this is something I have to think about since my son is December 22.
My brother started Kindergarten in Florida, we are both December babies. He started school early, and was one of the youngest. We moved to NY and I was one of the oldest but I never thought of it that way since many of my friends turned my age in January, and on. I was only 2 months older then my best friend. I think it was good that I waited to start school, for my brother he was the youngest and was fine.

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

Im a pre-k teacher. Our cut off date is November 30th so she would start nursery school when she's 2 going on 3 and then pre-k when she's 3 going on 4 and kindergarten when she's 4 going on 5. Depending on maturity, we sometimes recommend that children repeat nursery or pre-k so they get that extra year to catch up and they would be one of the older students as opposed to one of the youngest. Its all up to the parents though with us. We can strongly recommend staying back in these younger grades but it virtually up to the parents if they keep them back or not

Re: Help me understand..(school related)

My DS was also born on November 4th, and he started kindergarten this past September, at 4 years old. He turned 5 in November - there were actually a few kids in his class that had Oct/Nov birthdays.
