Can you get your baby baptized if ?

Can you get your baby baptized if one parent is catholic?

And also - does the god mother/father also have to be catholic?

I'm asking because I am not catholic and DH is. We would like to get DD baptized.

Also, BIL SIL have asked me to be godmother of our nephew. They know that I am not catholic and said if their church gives them a problem, they would find another church that wouldn't.

That really makes me uncomfortable because I hate to cause issues!

does each church have their own rules about this?

TIA

I'm pretty sure anyone/child can get baptized, it doesn't matter what the religion of the parents is.

Different churches have different rules. DH and I are godparents to my nephew, and neither of us were baptized. My SIL found a church that allowed the parents to select the godparents, regardless of their baptism status.

Good luck!

I am Catholic, DS is Greek Orthodox. Godmother was Catholic and Godfather was Greek Orthodox. It might vary by church, but our religion didn't matter at all, and only one godparent had to be a Catholic, but they have to have received all the available sacraments.

That's what DH thought but we just started trying to set something up for DD and DH called a church in his old neighborhood. They asked for the godparents papers and also asked about the parents. DH said the mother wasn't catholic and the woman didn't out right say they wouldn't do it but kept INSISTING it would be a better idea to do a church closer to where we live. we were unsure if it was just her polite way of saying "get lost" Chat Icon

It might have been I've had my fair amount of ridiculous run ins with these women that run the church offices, but I do think they encourage you to register in your local parish. Good luck!

As long as one parent is catholic then you can baptize your DC. As far as godparents....everything I have seen states on godparent must be catholic and the other should be Christian. And must be opposite sex

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

Actually some churches do have stricter rules than others. My bil isnt catholic and 1 church denied christening their child due to this. They wanted him to convert. So they went to anothrr church.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

I believe on both notes it depends on the church, usually they dont give you a problem as long as one parent is catolic tho but the godparents depends on the church

The church i go too wouldnt allow my half sister to be his DS's godmother because she is Luthern

This exactly. Although, the baptism certificate we received in the mail reversed them so technically the non catholic godfather is the the "godfather" and my catholic sister is the witness. Guess they don't pay to much attention to their rules.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

It depends on the church. Some are very strict about who they allow to receive sacraments and some are more lenient.

I was baptized Catholic, but at a young age my mom started bringing us to a Lutheran church. I did not receive First Holy Communion, don't know about any of the saints, and I couldn't do a "Hail Mary" if I tried. When it was time to look for churches for my wedding, we had to find one that allowed me to be Lutheran. We lucked out and the church my DH belonged to allowed it. We had no issues baptizing DD there when it was time.

Re:Godparents: The only "rule" they had was that at least one godparent had to be Catholic and show a baptismal certificate.

Yes. My SIL is half jewish but my BIL is catholic and all 3 of their kids are baptized. As far as you being a godmother, I don't think it should be a problem. When we baptized DS, we were told that as long as just one of the godparents was a confirmed catholic, it was fine

I am also Catholic & DH is Greek orthodox.
Our Godmothers for twins are both catholic & Godfathers are Orthodx. The way I understand it, only the Orthodox godparent is recognized. Catholics CAN NOT touch oil that baby is baptized in & names will NOT be put on certificate. They do get to stand on alter though. What church did you go through. Ours is Holy Trinity in Hicksivlle. Our boys Christening is in August.

I was not baptized any religion but my husband is Catholic and our daughter was able to be baptized with no problem. They asked that both godparents be baptized and Christian but only one must be confirmed Catholic (and the other is considered a witness.)

This was at St Mary's in East Islip and I loved them--they were very non-judgemental and accepting of my not being baptized. We had to do a class beforehand and the woman who ran it was great.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

Thank you for all the help! I'm glad to read that others were able to get their Lo baptized. My husband is not a very religious person but the baby being baptized is important to him.

For the previous poster who suggested heir churches - I appreciate it but we are living in nj now so I can't use the suggestions unfortunately!

Thank u, hopefully we can take care of this soon. Dd is certainly not getting younger or smaller. She has already outgrown the party dress I bought for the dinner after the ceremony

My church allows only one to be Catholic. For my niece they allowed one of her Godparents, and he is Jewish.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

I am not Catholic, I am Protestant. DH is Catholic. I won't convert. We are exposing our sons to both, they are both Christian though so they can make the choice as to how they want to practice and worship when they are older.

That being said...we baptized our boys in the Catholic church that we were married in and the one that DH and his family are members. When signing them up to be baptized we met with a deacon after picking a date and he asked if DH was Catholic and I said yes, he asked if I was Catholic and I said no, he asked what sect of Protestant I was and I told him and he said okay then he asked who the godparents were and never asked if they were Catholic.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

Depends on the church.

I'm protestant, DH is catholic. Years ago when we tried to get our oldest baptised in a catholic church we had major issues. We wound up baptising her protestant in the end.

With my most recent experience with my younger two we looked into both catholic and protestant churches. Most would have let us baptise them there, the catholic just required that one of the god parents was catholic and we had to pay to go to a class.

In the end we decided to baptise them all protestant, but you can definitly find catholic churches out there that will do it if one of you in catholic.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

I don't think it's wrong for a church to want god parents that are the religion of the church. IMO I think a non- Christian god parent is a bit ridiculous considering a god parent is in charge of the child's religious upbringing. IMO some people treat this religious tradition like it's just a fun cultural thing to pick their bff or whatever to be "god mother" and are sort of forgetting what it actually means. You can't expect all the churches to want to get involved in that. They're trying to propagate the religion, kwim? And ftr I'm not even Christian- it just always boggles my mind when people want non-Christian god parents.

Eta I'm really talking about non-Christian but I think you may have meant just non-catholic. I think the churches still have a right to apply the same standard as I explained but yes I know there's more leeway and you will find more churches willing to give that leeway.

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

i'm catholic. DH does not believe in religion. DS was baptized in my church with no problem. we had to attend a class but godparents did not.

we had both catholic godparents. (i didn't realize we could pick non-catholic. )

here is what a friend of mine, who has a Ph.D. and is becoming a deacon told me about godparents: "for Baptsim there are two godparents. At least one must be a fully initated Catholic. The other can be a Baptized "christian witness" ----but they must be at least Christian. This is because the idea is that Godparents are meant to be christian role models."

Re: Can you get your baby baptized if ?

In my church yes as long as 1 parent is. For the God parents 1 has to be and the other has to be atleast baptized in water. Also the catholic one has to have made their confirmation.
