PLEASE keep your children safe around pools

Our friends's son drowned in a pool last night. I am sick to my stomach right now.

I know we hear this often, but PLEASE keep your children safe while playing in pools and please send a prayer out for the family. I cannot even begin to imagine what they are going through right now.

I think that sometimes when people have above ground pools, they think that having a swing up ladder is enough, but it isn't! You have to have a fence around your pool! We have a pool fence around our pool with a self closing gate, but I am still nervous and extremely cautious.

. I'm so sorry about your friends dc. Drowning is one of my biggest fears! We have an above ground pool, it's fenced and locked, with a roll guard ladder that's locked and we have a pool alarm! I also have a gate in our hall god forbid dd climbed out of her crib at night she couldn't get passed our hall. I'm overly paranoid but I think it's so important to have every precaution you can have be available.

If this is the incident in West Islip, the ladder was NOT put up. It makes me so sick to my stomach that these poor children drown every Summer in accidents that are 100% preventable.

OP I'm sorry for your loss

Re: PLEASE keep your children safe around pools

Thanks for the reminder. What a tragic loss. And please remember that kids can so easily drown at parties where everyone thinks that someone has their eye on the kids. I read something about having adults take turns being the assigned pool watcher. My niece is a lifeguard and she's been booking parties. I think it's a great idea & worth the expense. Now if only I had a pool!

I was referring to the 4 year old boy in Douglaston. It happened the same day at the 21 month old in Islip. Both incidents are so tragic and devastating. I feel for their families.

Re: PLEASE keep your children safe around pools

So sad. This is the exact reason my kids aren't allowed in the backyard alone. They must have an adult with them. Plus, we have a semi inground with a fence around the entire pool deck, gate, lock, and alarm. Can never be too safe.
