PSA: Pools and children...
I just have to say it...if you can't find your child, please check your pool first regardless of safety precautions. Most children who have drown are said to be missing from their parents' sight for less then 5 minutes.
ETA: Also, children and adults drown quietly...without splashing and screaming as depicted on most media. People and children have drowned surrounded by people because it's a very quiet process.

Re: PSA: Pools and children...
Can I please add...
Get gate alarms and water displacement alarms!!! Also, swimming lessons are SO important. If they fall in children will "swim" toward the center of the pool instead of turning around and grabbing the wall. Learning to do that is SO important!

Re: PSA: Pools and children...
My DS is almost 21 months, and I am FREAKING out about the pool this year. It's not open yet, but can anyone recommend a good pool alarm (inground) We have an extra fence around our pool, so I want to get gate alarms...but the gate could be climbed. I also have an extra lock on my door at the top which leads to the backyard, but is there anything else recommended for a sliding glass door? I just want all the precaution possible, because i know it only takes a minute....

Re: PSA: Pools and children...
One Step Ahead has the water displacement alarms. They are $$ but well worth it for the "what ifs"

Re: PSA: Pools and children...
Great PSA, especially after I just saw this on Newsday
Two Mount Sinai brothers, ages 2 and 5, are fighting for their lives Wednesday morning after being pulled from the family pool by their older brothers, police said.
Emmanuel Paul, 5, and his brother, Jeffrey Paul, 2, were in critical condition after their 12-year-old brother found them floating face down in the family's backyard pool on Peach Tree Lane about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, Suffolk police said.
The unidentified 12-year-old and his twin 11-year-old brothers pulled their two younger siblings from the pool. The 12-year-old performed CPR, police said, while one of the 11-year-old brothers called 911.
Police said the younger boys responded to the cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, and a short time later officers and members of the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance corps responded to the scene. The boys were transported to St. Charles Hospital, and then were transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center in critical condition.

We don't have a pool, but we are going on vacations this year that include a property with a fresh water lake in the backyard and one with a walk-in pool..
We're starting Saf-t-Swim next week...DD is 22 months...
