How safe is it to go to the dentist?
Hey girls. Have any of you gone to the dentist since you got pregnant? I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I'm pretty sure I have small cavities that need to be treated and I hear if you don't treat your teeth they inflame so fast. Please need your advice. Thank you!

Re: How safe is it to go to the dentist?
I went last week, I had a filling that fell out. My OB's office told me no epinepherine and I could have xrays if needed but I had to wear the apron.
That didn't sit too well with me (I JUST found out I was pregnant and the 1st trimester is when most of the development occurs). I told the dentist I was pregnant and asked him not to do xrays and to fill the tooth with no novacaine. He did what I asked and it was a bit painful but fine.
I would call your OB's office and ask.

It's important to go to the dentist while pregnant. Proper dental hygiene is linked to preventing preterm delivery (or perhaps it's studies saying that poor dental hygiene is linked to preterm delivery). But my understanding is no xrays nor novocaine while pregnant. I'm no doctor though. I'd talk to your OB and your dentist about it -- they know what they're doing!

Ideally, it is best to wait until the second trimester if you have to get work done. However, if you need to go during the first trimester, wear a lead apron for any x-rays, and I believe they can still use an anesthesia called carbocaine if you need it.

I read somewhere it's better to go through second trimester. So I think I will wait and go then. I did call my ob today and they told me today again no provocane and they have to fax the dentist the pregnancy form. I will wait till 3 months. I hope nothing happens :(

I went around 12/13 weeks. They just won't do xrays, but I think everything else is safe. It is important to take care of your teeth during pregnancy because for some reason your gums weaken during this time...not sure why.

Re: How safe is it to go to the dentist?
My dentist said that you should have a cleaning at least 2 times during your pregnancy.....Some people get really swollen gums and the cleanings help get rid of excess bacteria...eewwwww
