I may be off here but from a legal standpoint I do not support polygamy. A marriage contract is basically a document for the state to acknowledge that two people (obv gender depends on which state you are in) are eligible to receive certain benefits (death benefits, tax benefits, health benefits, etc.) . Unfortunately, the states do not require that a marriage contains any element of "love."
I don't see the majority of states willing to expand the rights of 2 married individuals to multiple spouses.

But, I can also sign half a dozen legal documents and have a contract with foster and/or adopted children. By having multiple contracts with multiple children, they automatically get death benefits, tax benefits, health benefits, inheritance benefits, etc., so a precedence exists for something similar already.

(I'm intentionally keeping this at a purely contractual level, and keeping love, morality, religion, dominance, etc, out of my discussion points.)

Yep, and I think that's what makes it so complicated--what is it that makes marriage different those contracts? I think the fact that it's between adults is one thing--adults sharing benefits of that ilk is different than kids sharing benefits. (Although couldn't you "adopt" someone at 17, then when they're 18 they would have the same rights as your adult wife? Aaack!! I feel like I'm thinking myself into a circle!)

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?

all i have to say is... separation of church and state... the only reason that polygamy is "wrong" now is because the laws were based on religious beliefs... which is BS

I dont care who or how many of them you want to marry!! Go for it if it makes you happy!

Sometimes the more the merrier!

I'm pro "consenting adults" marriage. As long as all parties involved are consenting adults, I have no problem with it. The age of consent can vary by state, the gender doesn't matter, and the number of individuals doesn't matter to me.... as long as all parties, both existing and incoming, know all of the details, and consent to the arrangement.
One guy having two families on opposite sides of the country who don't know about each other is not good. If everyone consents, it doesn't affect my marriage, or my life, so I really don't care.
DW also agrees with this. We've talked about it after watching Sister Wives. It's not for us, but we definitely think it's OK.

Yep, I feel the same.

Gay marriage and polygamy are two different things. Being gay is not a choice but polygamy is. Polygamy is a religious and spiritual choice and while I don't agree with it, I don't think the government should prohibit it.

I support any union that protects all parties.

I'm all for polygamy if polyandry is equally accepted. And something tells me it won't be.

... there is a reason the ratio of male to female is about 1:1.

I REALLY don't see that one follows the other.

From a legal stand point, I can totally see it as next up. The laws have changed in some states - changing the definition of marriage being between a man and a woman. Why wouldn't the laws be changed again?

But NOBODY can legally have more than 1 spouse. Like NOBODY can legally marry their pet goat.

Right now, yes, NOBODY can have more than 1 spouse. But 20 years ago NOBODY could legally marry a person of the same-sex. Laws have changed, why not for this?

i don't care either way - however i wonder how polygamy will affect health insurance costs - who is covered ? is everyone covered?
will people just enter a polygamy marriage for medical benefits etc?

This is the same as equating gay marriage to husbandry. It's not the same. What happens between two (or more than one) consenting adults is not the same. Animals cannot give their consent.

You can enter into a contract with more than one party.

FTR, I only have one husband & no wives. Although we probably could use a wife is she's better at cleaning & cooking.Chat Icon

I never really thought about the connection between the two, but I guess there's no real reason for me to stick my nose where it doesn't belong if a bunch of chicks want to share one guy.

I guess I'm less comfortable with it because, well, it's kind of anti-woman. That's the part that bothers me, but live and let live I suppose.

that's pretty much how i feel

So i don't see how supporting gay marriage means that you should automatically support polygamy

I am a huge supporter of gay marriage, because I believe that any TWO people who are in love should be able to express that love through marriage. I don't believe that marriage is between more than two more. If there's more than two people, I don't see the need for marriage.

You hit it on the head. What is marriage at that point if it's between so many people?

Why is polygamy and gay marriage considered comparable? Am I missing something? That's like saying if you like ice cream, do you also like surfing?

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?

I don't think gay marriage and polygamy are exactly comparable, but I think the point is that you should be able to marry who you want.

I don't think the argument against polygamy that "legally marriage is between TWO people" is a valid argument because in a lot of places "legally marriage is between a man and a woman" and that is what people are fighting for - to change that.

Personally I could use another wife - it would take away a lot of stress knowing someone else was pitching in with all the responsibilities. I'm (half) kidding. :)

For what its worth I don't view polygamy as anti woman, I always imagine it as open marriage for both men and women.

Who am I to tell anyone what the make-up of their family should be.

Marriage is a choice (sexuality is not). I chose to marry my dh and not the guy/gal down the street.

There are some legal aspects that need to be worked out, but right now illegal polygamists are already abusing the system (welfare, claiming single/head of household, financial aid, etc)

It was in the first post-but here it is again-

If you support the legalization of gay marriage, do you also support the legalization of polygamy? What is the difference? If the law should not define who can marry, should it define how many we can marry?

i just meant what brought this up? it seems like such a hot button issue to post about. bc all it takes is one person to say "XYZ is WRONG" and then it's all downhill from there.

Gay marriage has never been posted about? When has possible controversy ever kept someone from posting a question on this site?

I read an article discussing the legalities of changing the definition of marriage and how that opens it up for further interpretation, polygamy as an example. I found it interesting. If you do not, don't post.

What does it matter? Don't want to discuss it, don't open the post, plenty of other topics out there Chat Icon

woah, Touchy / defensive much? I wasn't getting nasty I was wondering because it seemed to be a random post and I thought the comparison to polygamy seemed to be something that could definitely Chat Icon Chat Icon I was genuinely asking if there was something that made you think of this. You seriously need to take it down a notch cause that was a NASTY response and an unwarranted one at that.

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?

I guess I support gay marriage but not polygamy because people who are gay are born gay. That is who they are, they didn't choose to be attracted to the same sex. Therefore to not allow them to marry simply because of who they are is discrimination.

Polygamy is a conscience choice.
