Re: 1st birthday planning advice make vs buy
I made just about everything. We did a winter-one-derland theme. I made paper snowflakes in blue and white and hung them from the ceilngs. I made hot cocoa cones as the favors for over 100 guests. I had a candy buffet and did all the chocolate dipped stuff myself- Oreos, pretzels and marshmallows. My SIL made cake pops, and friend made a fondant cake, everything else was store bought candies, donuts, pastries.
Eta- I forgot to say that it was at a hall. So they handled all f the food and alcohol and room set up- except of course for my own decorations, I set that all up myself.

Re: 1st birthday planning advice make vs buy
We catered food, rented table, tent and chairs.
I made a birthday banner, picture time line, chocolate lollipops as favors, and made her cake. I made an ice cream cake, made the ice cream and all the fixings. I was a lot of time and effort but it was delish. The cake was stressful but I am not sure I would have bought one ,
I wish i had got some sort of character to come visit. W only had 4 kids from ages 4-1 so it wasn't necessary but I wanted to but got talked out of it. I wish I went to a restaurant or hall instead of FIL house

I made a lot with some help of die cut characters from etsy. Ck out my album for pictures.
We did a cookie monster theme. I bought cardboard boxes and cut blue paper and attached them to each side of the box. I bought die cut cookie monster faces and the # 1 and attached the to the sides of the boxes. I made a whole at top to place balloons in. This became my centerpiece.
I made cookie monster Oreos as favors.

Re: 1st birthday planning advice make vs buy
The one thing I personally can say that I will never do without ever again is a waitress...They are worth their weight in gold (for a home party)...
I usually do a combination of make/buy when it comes to food...
I was a former childrens entertainer, so I am generally pretty good with occupying the kids myself, however I do like dj's for certain parties ( in a hall etc...)

Re: 1st birthday planning advice make vs buy
We did a 1.5 birthday party for Emmy since she is Christmas Day baby. We rented chairs/tables and had her cake made by a friend. Ordered some 1/2 birthday balloons. We made all the food, decor, and decorations. It was a very very very simple backyard BBQ so we didn't go crazy. This year we'll do her 2.5 birthday and it'll be a backyard BBQ, but since she's really into DOra that will be the theme with balloons, decorations form Nick Jr I cut out and make, and some stuff from Etsy.com
